Played MidlandValley early yesterday to beat the daily weather we're having. 8" of measured rain at the airport for the month of May. Play was extremely wet the front (started on the back actually) and into the second nine. Course cannot keep up with the growth, doing well to keep the greens, collars, and fairways in good playing shape. anything off of the short stuff was easily lost and if played, the shot was to be played to end up in the cut fairway. and my feet were wet too and yall know the routine of keeping the clubs and hands clean. anyway, I have found a hybrid, callaway 3iron (used at BonaventureGolf $22 !!) and first time out with it. So much rain, I haven't even taken it to the range yet. after a couple really weak attempts at playing it in the tall and wet rough, I finally warmed up and started hitting the fairways. It is a hammer, exactly what I needed and was hunting. I got in a groove (like you get sometimes when you can swing so hard offa the tee that you grunt) and was very happy tee to green but I am a no-puttin ole boy, a problem mentioned in my opening post here. Since re-starting my golf habit from a long lay-off, I s'pose it will come around but I'm a senior now and I get over the putting as long as I can lay the wood to it. make a long story longer, 51-47, opening in the wet with trip double double and an early attitude to overcome. fairly happy wit it.

Best ball for swing speed under 90 mph
burr replied to John Boudreau's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Noodle 'long & soft' balls. Besides being inexpensive, they are sold at most 'big blue' stores with any kind of golf stuff aisle for $20 or so. A playing partner insist that I try a sleeve and I am very impressed - longish, straight, checks up, and durable (I've played several full rounds with this brand and they clean up great at the ball wash and I'll keep'em in my primary 'til the 'luck' plays out of 'em). They feel softer than NXTs, another ball I've tried out. I also like the E6s except for the $$. I can't keep the proV1s straight enough off the tee. It's got me wondering is there something I don't know about this ball. -

and despite what most opinion is here, a lotta pros use it for whatever reasons. I'm still trying it on and off for the Killas reasoning. and it's getting better, I feel much mo better over the ball now, after several more rounds and a little practice on the greens. The 'feel' had left me during a long layoff and it may be the last to come around.

Augusta National… Without the Prestige
burr replied to HJJ003's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
We've got one here (totally private club) that has dreams of similar prestige; has begun with an annual amateur event here (started maybe 5 years ago) attracts teens from around the world. takes time and $$ and plenty room doesn't hurt. it is soon on the calendar.- 51 replies

Augusta National… Without the Prestige
burr replied to HJJ003's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
correct, but the design was there, the greens were undulated but burmuda. It takes a while to get those 100ft loblolly pines to the 36"dia that they now are. AugNat'l has $$ like one could not imagine. and to answer the question, it takes ages to achieve this prestige with no slips. What most don't realize and is amazing is the damage done in the 2014 ice storm (that took down Ike's tree in 17 fairway). To have the tournament less than 2 months later is more than amazing. Maybe half of these 100footers were lost on the course and most don't realize it. In the shots (photos to open segments of masters coverage) across the way, those pines that look deformed are some of the 'saved' ones from that devastating storm. (sorry, got a little distracted with that last paragraph) also, me thinks CBS has helped with the prestige and exclusive-ness. There is quite a bond between the two.- 51 replies

I think that it is pure emotion for the chance to get to Augusta again (after missing out on the event cherished by all), not to mention the instant invites to other majors . $$$ it's a big deal to qualify for an invitational like Augusta.

and now that I think further, they will have the room to open the right side of #4. Never more than thick woods, it also originally shielded from public (Berkmans Rd). This would allow direct and free flowing access to the new #5 teebox and limited viewing of #4 (as it is a lower elevation than the green area. This area also would maybe allow for another entrance to the tournament. -

oops, did not see this last night, actually had it in the #13 thread. anyway, @iacas, this area is really congested and only steps from the #4 green. They probably thinking anything will help down in there (for patrons and the racket they bring when crowded into a small spot). Moving the tee will give a new route, green to tee for the playas, keeping them from this congestion. -

and on a similar note, #5 will be stretched and the cramped area between #4 green and #5 tee will be fixed. Yall don't even want to talk about the $$ already shelled out on the other side of the course from #13, the acres of formerly residential properties the Nat'l bought from the individual homeowners one at a time (to make tournament parking lots), the city street that was purchased and re-routed (Berkmans Rd). This expansion of #5 will bulge out into what once was Berkmans Road, also once the most vulnerable spot on the course to common folk. Only a small bamboo grove separated the course from city street traffic. $$ is no object for these folks, a tradition like no other ... http://www.augusta.com/masters/story/news-sports/2018-02-17/site-plans-show-proposed-changes-fifth-hole-augusta-national -
I'll tell you what makes me enjoy the game MrGrouchO, hitting it in the screws and knocking down the flag. I dont know what might be so unusual about asking a rules question and a short description of a reason for the question, go figger

I agree, just trying to work on concentration (I guess) more than anything. and the line would add focus maybe and re-assurance (since they are not helpful from the replies). How about the oversize grip idea ? I have a relaxed light grip in all my swings including the putt, again just trying to find something. and I am one that does not mind practice (but getting to the course is another thing altogether)

OK, thanks. I have just never (it seems) seen the stripe on other shots, other than when the stripe comes into play. and it probably depends on who I'm playing with. I have discovered that the type ball makes a very significant difference in my play, maybe biggest difference.

sure this will be fairly simple but I didn't see it in a search. What's the rule for changing out a ball during play - and I mean changing from a ball tee to green, then a ball for putting. Reason I ask is I am searching for relief from bad putting, I've just started back playing from a long layoff (maybe 15yrs) and now at 61yo, I can enjoy the game again. I love to watch golf nowaday since HD tv; it makes it so much better to watch, I feel like I've learned just from watching. And I figure that one thing to do is start striping my ball (like some of the pros). It makes sense. With this, I just don't notice the pros 'stripe' when playing from tee to green. Do they change to a putting ball when putting ? Is it in the rules to play a ball tee to green or any other place during the hole, then change to the striped ball ? And a second adjustment I am planning is to change to the fatter grip than the standard size I have. Putting is not terrible bad, I'm just looking for more consistency, especially on those long lags. I realize that grains and stuff change putt to putt but I'm looking for some physical change to help with the practice part. thanks, Burr

hello, while googling my problem, this site was near top of list with a seniors topic and it is exactly what I needed. I am a 60 yo with many years of enjoyment from this game. 16 years ago I had a pretty serious back injury and had to give up the game, or so I thought. Anyway, I'm back at it - as a senior ! After so long without ANY golf activity, I decided to get out the clubs; mainly just to see if I still had it, the coordination and such to hit it clean and crisp. Dang, It's still there ! Several trips to the range at numerous of my old grounds, and I took the chance and played; hit the ball good and bad, did not keep score, did not have any physical problems (except the normal golf muscles finally being used) and got the fever again. I blame this on HD tv and all the golf coverage nowaday. HDTV was made for golf. anyway, this place looks good and I'll be around, not too much into posting 'cept when I need to, and my original google question was about needing to get my long iron distances back, and I've already got answers to further investigate. Thanks !
