I've been playing for a couple years now and until recently was hitting my irons pretty well. I upgraded my starter box set to Ping G5 irons which I just sold today. The reason I sold them was ever since I was given a 5 hybrid......I cannot hit my irons anymore. I shank nearly every shot with my irons. It frustrates the heck out of me. My thought was to buy a hybrid set. My current clubs are: TM burner superfast driver - 10.5 degree - stiff Nike sasquatch 3 w - 15 degree - stiff TM burner 08 3 hybrid - 19 degree - stiff TM burner 08 5 hybrid - 25 degree - stiff Ping G5 U (gap) wedge - 50 degree (i kept this when I sold the 4-pw) Wilson Sand Wedge - 55 degree TM Rossa putter I'm thinking I'd like the Adams 6 and 7 hybrid irons due to their bulk but i'm attracted to the taylormade set as well - it's $13 cheaper (not a big deal but it's there) and my entire set would match, less my 3 wood and sand wedge Thing is.....the reason I sold my irons was to get something easier to hit. I know the G5's were great clubs......but I just lost my consistency for them. Has anyone ever hit a 6 or 7 hybrid? Are they much different than the cavity back irons? I'm going to go to golfsmith to check out the differences for myself......but in the mean time I'm online doing research......any help would be greatly appreciated. Recommendations? if you were in my shoes, what would you do?

^^ agreed. I enjoyed the Tavistock coverage much better than the GolfLogix, Ab Circle, and Medicus infomercials :D

You are da man Three Putt!! That's perfect. I never even thought about the driving range. That along with the optimal viewing areas.......greatly appreciated.

I think Nike Golf has a very valid point about having an opening the entire round and players up your butt. That makes me very uncomfortable and makes me play faster. I hate holding people up. If I'm waiting on a group and there are others right behind me, so be it.......but if there's something I can do to speed up play I will. From what it sounds like in this case tho is even if there wasn't a gap the people behind would've still been hitting into them because they were a**holes. And hitting into the group in front of you ONE TIME being forgivable.......whew. I have done this but not on purpose. I'm a very high handicapper and a few months back I must've hit the sweet spot, with good timing, and excellent balance or whatever because I nailed my 3 wood farther than ever! And it went into the group in front of me. I didn't yell "fore" because there was no way my ball was going to go that far (so i thought). I didn't hit anyone but I felt very bad and embarrassed when I saw where it landed which sucked because it was probably the best shot, mechanically, i've ever had.

I found some info on the tourney at http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/r475/ this includes tee times for the first and second rounds.

if i was on the course 6 days a week i would very likely go once a week if i could afford to do so
-
i'd have to say it's going to depend on how much you're going to practice if you're taking a lesson weekly but can only get to the range one more time per week, you're not going to have enough time to work on what they're showing you so really you're paying for practice time in my very short experience with lessons i'd say every 2 - 3 weeks is optimal - even with 2-3 range days and an round per week. i did once per week for 3 weeks and for me it was overload. i had to take a week off to get back to enjoying what i was doing.

I'm going out on Friday. I've never been to a PGA tour event. Any pointers?

i couldn't even fathom a hole in one at this point of my game.........if i did I might be so excited that I would...........but probably not i agree with everyone in my group, including strangers. i would think that after buying the house a drink people would be kind enough to treat you the rest of the time you're there..........but in this day and age that probably would not happen.

like stated above - it's the little things that will help you get your ball flight where you want it to go will the angle adversly affect your ball flight? i don't thinik so but consistency is what you're aiming for in this game

i've got a similar handicap and am taking a lesson package right now previous to the lessons i was playing about twice a month, sometimes weekly my mother booked the lessons as a pair and she paid for them - she set them up every week this forced me to start going to the range and playing more often because I actually want to get something out of the lessons lesson 1 i learned how to swing - i was doing nearly everything wrong lesson 2 - i was corrected on some thing - learned some basics on chipping (8 iron and pw distance in air vs roll, etc) lesson 3 - corrections on my swing again - a putting technique after each lesson we played 18 and between each week i hit the range twice after lesson 3 at the range i had the worst day EVER my thoughts.........i was thinking waay too much - too much crammed in my head at one time more golf than i've ever had forced too quickly i called to postpone lesson 4 took the weekend off and went to the range today........not sure what happened but i was hitting great! i cannot wait to get back out to the range - i'm hoping it wasn't a fluke i am definitely getting addicted to this sport but at least for me that was too much to learn at one time if i ever book a set of lessons again (cheaper by the package) i'll definitely space mine out every 2 to 3 weeks the best benefit i've found here is that i'm playing more than ever and enjoying the crap out of it

yes - sorry behind the ball on the tee box

2010 North Texas Golf Show - Two thumbs way down (for me anyway)

I started UNT back in 94. I didn't finish......but I had a blast trying ;) -
I prefer people standing behind me on the tee box. More eyes on the ball helps me keep my head down as i'm not worried about where it's gonna go. I don't talk, stand in someone's line, or move around when they're about to hit the ball and have always gotten the same respect. Anytime I'm paired up with someone or a group I gear up mentally to play with a-holes but have been pleasantly surprised most every time.

The first time I ever played was about 2 years ago when I was 30 or 31. I played off and on with a couple stints of weekly play and range practice. Mostly I would play a couple times a month......sometimes I would go months without playing. This past month I started taking some lessons and I really, really wish I had started earlier in my life. But I'm enjoying it now for sure.

I'm taking a 4pack of lessons right now in Hudson. Just north of NPR at the Links golf course. My instructor is Ray Cisbani and I've never taken any other lessons before but to me he seems very good. He's calm, patient, and changed my game significantly. I'm taking lessons with playing partner and a 4 pack of 1 hour lessons is 195 for a couple. I believe it's 160 for an individual. here's a little bio I found on him from google http://saintleolions.com/profile.asp?playerID=108

I'm working on my grip, ball position, swing turning my belt buckle and shoulders to the hole keeping my head down and looking for the tee or grass to move before i look for the ball turning my body - not sliding forward i took my first lesson after playing for just over a year and guess what...........i was doing just about everything wrong!!

I had another post about what to spend a Sports Authority gift card on and alot of the answers was: LESSONS. Even take the gift card to a pro and see if he'll trade it for lessons!! Money is tight but I'm not THAT broke, I just wanted to treat myself (which I did). After playing poorly with my new wedge I decided to bite the bullet and spring for lessons. My question is...... how have lessons improved your game? How many did you take and at what point in your progression did you find them most helpful? Did you get what you wanted out of them? I'm a 30 handicap. Just started playing regularly a few months ago. I would like to improve my short game. To be able to hit the green consistently from 150 yards in. I signed up for 4 hour long lessons. We'll see how it goes. Any input is appreciated.

well I'm weak. first off. I am getting lessons. 4 one hour lessons from a pro starting the last week of October. I'm psyched about this as I've only learned from watching the golf channel. but as far as the gift card I got a Nike Sumo2 3 wood (hence the weakness), a cheapy Wilson sand wedge, and a dozen cheap balls. The 3 wood has a square shape and I really like it. I was hitting good with it right out of the gate and while I really didn't see much difference off of the tee I could hit much better with it off the grass on my second shot. Probably mental but I like it. The sand wedge was a $29 Wilson. Boy I had problems with this. I've been getting used to altering my swing for short flop shots with my pitching wedge and thought with this new 56 degree sand wedge I'd have much more control. I was very frustrated to find a few times I shot completley over the green, then back over again, then even more frustration!!! On the back 9 I went back to my PW and was doing better. This was the main catalyst for lessons. I will keep you updated with those. Also I bought some cheap Wilson Hyper Balls. They were on sale for 7.99 a dozen. I can only assume the reason they were so cheap is they got scuffed up so very easily. 2 hits and they were marked up. I was using Maxfli Noodles I got at samsclub before and like those considerably better. I never had an issue with scuffing or marking before I lost them. I'm a noob to the sport and I guess it's live and learn. thanks for all the replies...........and yes Lessons!! I'm excited. I hope to break 100 consistently soon.

checking Sports Authority's web site they don't carry the Tom Watson wedges. What I'm considering now is the Nike SV Tour Wedges with steel shafts. They're 69.99 and come in 54, 56, 58 and 60 degree lofts. There are also Taylor Made rac Chrome wedges for 79.99 that come in 50 and 54 degree lofts. What I was considering was the nike's in 54 degree and 58 degree lofts. Any input is greatly appreciated.

awesome - thanks for the input so far guys as far as lessons.......yeah i wish it were lesssons instead of a gift card, but that's neithe here nor there. right now I do not think I've progressed farther than my equipment, which is why I was reluctant about upgrading. Yes that is my bag you listed. I'm really thinking about the wedges as recommended. I didn't think about upgrading my putter but I like the one I have. My playing partner has an Odyssey putter and it's real nice, and my putting is horrible most times, but I thought that was more me than the club. I wil most def. check into the tommy armour wedges. And I'd love lessons too! Maybe x-mas...... as far as they hybrids......i'm pretty good with them when I connect nicely. the course I play is pretty short. On a good day I range around 200+ off tee. If I'm not in the trees I usually have a playable shot onto the green......but that's where my game lacks badly. I know.........LESSONS!

I'm a new golfer. I enjoy the heck out of it. Lately I've been playing almost weekly. If I don't get to play I try to hit the driving range. I'm around a 30 handicap. I've got a $199 complete set of Top Flite XL clubs and think they're pretty nice. It doesn't have a sand wedge. I have a hard time with my driver so for the most part I tee off with my 3 wood which I can hit pretty straight. I just got a $150 gift card for Sports Authority. I was thinking about a new 3-wood. or a sand wedge. I'm just curious how much a new 3-wood would help me. Right now I hit my 3-wood 210 to 235 (not super consistent but when i'm doing well) I was thinking about a sand wedge because my PW with full swing goes almost 100 and I'd like to have something to fill that gap. I've already got shoes, glove, tees, balls, towel. I need help. I'd hate to throw out $150 for 1 club that won't really change my game much. Any other ideas of what to get?

i'm not voting because i'm so inconsistent at the course i usually play on - 3 fridays ago was no pars and i shot a 106 2 fridays ago was 1 par but no snowmen!! - shot a 101 last friday was 4 pars but 4 snowmen - shot a 101 my putting was very good for me last week - hit a majority of 6-8 footers and was able to two putt the long ones -- i'm hoping to break 100 for the first time this friday

temperature wise it's not as hot here in Florida as y'all get in Texas and AZ but I grew up in Dallas and as far as I can tell it's just about as hot here. It's just a different heat but no matter what you don't want to be outside in it..........I do however play at 11am on Fridays because I'm a cheap bastard!!
