Heck with the jeans, I'm wearing sweatpants!

My best club is my cheapest. It's my Wilson-Staff FY-Brid 3 wood that I got on clearance. I can hit it off the tee or off the deck dead straight and about 225.

TaylorMade R7 or TaylorMade Burner Plus
goslin23 replied to ksmoguy's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have the R7 Draw irons and I think they're pretty decent. They have a solid feel on the sweet spot and let you know when you hit them off the toe/heel without losing to much distance. They are my 1st true brand name clubs so I don't have much to compare them to except no name generic "clone" clubs and between the two, the R7's are awesome! I haven't hit the Burner Plus though so I have no opinion on those. -
Anyone *not* bag any fairway woods?
goslin23 replied to amcquay's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I was thinking of dumping my driver all together (or just getting a different driver I can hit). I'm in the fairway about 65% of the time with it, but I'm in the fairway about 90% with my 15* FY-brid and only about 10-20 yards shorter it seems. I love that 3 wood, hit WAY better than my 3 iron hybrid off the ground. -
Can I have your old wedges when you replace them yearly? I'm fairly sure I can get many more rounds out of them! :)

What is more important to you? A......
goslin23 replied to Msokol13's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I guess I got lucky and got a Wilson Staff FY-brid 3 wood that I can hit really good from the teebox or the turf. I had some doubts when I bought the club on clearance, so I am stunned at how well I can hit the ball with that club. I am going to give a serious look at all the Wilson Staff line for my next club purchase! My thought is that if you can hit it off the turf, you "should" be able to hit it even better off the teebox just don't use a tee or very short tee and hit down on it like a fairway shot. -=gos=- -
Golf Club Dividers
goslin23 replied to wolverine_man's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
My old cart bag has 14 tubes in it, granted it has a top with 14 holes that match up. I wonder if there is a way to insert some tubes in your bag to keep the grips separate? I bought a new Ogio stand bag that has a 8 way divider, but I do miss the individual tubes in my old bag sometimes. -
I wore some Old Navy cargo shorts and some sort of collared shirt that was on clearance somewhere I'm sure, some Austin Golf shoes and my TM R7 sweat stained hat... THE HORROR!!!

I pretty much have the longer clubs on top like mostly everyone else. But the one thing that bugs me is that my putter head cover almost always looks like it's going to fall off because the bag is too deep and the head cover rests on the rim of the bag. I did buy a putter clip that attaches to the side of the bag but I haven't tried it out just yet. -=gos=-

I have a Burner Draw and so far have only played 2 rounds with it. The 1st round I hit 5 out of 5 fairways on the front 9 (there are 8 par 3's on this particular course), and only missed one on the back because I hit a worm burner for some reason. The second round I had a few missed fairways, but none were because of a slice. It was poor aim, hitting trough one and another worm burner (I'm guessing that where the "Burner" name comes from??..lol). I also have the R7 Draw irons, which don't have the obvious closed face as the driver does but if they go right it's more of a slight fade than a slice. If you have the time and $$ for constant practice/lessons to cure your slice, then by all means get the neutral driver. But if you're like me and only get out 2 or 3 times a month then go for the draw biased driver. Of course the R9 460 would be the perfect one as you can adjust it as your game improves :P

I have the W/S FY-brid 3 wood and man, do I love that club! I hit the ball straight and long with that club every single time (which I don't with every other club in my bag). I'm almost kicking myself for not looking into the W/S iron line before buying my R7 Draw irons, but the R7's are pretty darn good too! -=gos=-

Lucky you, it's like my house has an umbrella over it. My area is almost in the severe drought zone I believe. My poor grass... There's no water restrictions in my neighborhood.. yet

Golfer A is rude to the staff, does not let people play through when there's a clear hole in front of him, does not repair divots on the greens, doesn't yell fore when he shanks one into the group on the next fairway, is drunk by the 3rd hole.. But damn, he's dressed nice.. (I played with this guy, it sucked!) Golfer B, polite, fast play, repairs golfer A's ball marks as well as his own, is conscious of others around his potential landing zones, wearing cargo shorts and a t-shirt.. Who do you want to be paired with?

Somone once told me that "it's too hot to golf".. obviously wasn't a golfer. I remember a round in Abilene, TX where it was 116 in the shade. One of my best rounds, the ball rolled a mile on the concrete.. I mean fairway! I'm trying to get used to the humidity here in Houston, I take a towel specifically for the sweat and a separate one for the clubs. So far so good. -=gos=-

In football I had to wear pads and a mouth guard to avoid injury, that makes sense to require the participants to wear those. It doesn't make sense to require a collard shirt and chino's to walk around hitting a golf ball.. (wearing a helmet and cup might make more sense actually)... I'll wear a collared shirt to be able to play the "better courses". I'm just saying that is has no bearing on the game or how you play it, only where you are "allowed" to play. All I have playing over and over in my mind is Ted Knight's character in Caddyshack, that's the vibe I'm getting from the people who think what people wear is THAT important...
-
The reason I think it has no bearing on the game is that the score at the end of the round has nothing to do with what you are wearing, you can be an idiot that dresses like a slob or be an idiot in a tux. It's not the clothes, it's the person. I could care less if someone wears jeans and a t-shirt on the course. In what way does that affect how I'm going to swing the golf club? Does it create an imbalance in the earth's gravity where it will cause me to mis-read a putt? No, it's simply stupid rules made up years ago by some rich snobs that were/are used as a reason not to let "peasants" play on their course.

I'm about 64 pages late on this and haven't read the cargo shorts thread so I don't know what's going on over there. I'm in the minority because I said it hurts the game, when in reality I think is has no bearing on the game. I had this discussion with my wife just the other day, it is something that just bugs the heck out of me... Is golf an elitist sport? If you are so shallow to judge a person on what they wear, then you are certainly a prejudiced elitist. The only shorts that I own and pretty much wear every day are cargo shorts. I also wear a T-shirt to work everyday that has some sort of logo or saying on it (like my Dunder Mifflin Paper Company one today). My clothes are clean, stain free, unoffensive with the words or images on them. Why should it matter that my shirt does not have a collar and my shorts have a lot of pockets, especially on the driving range? I actually had a comment about a harmless t-shirt that I was wearing from the starter when I was just going to the range, something like I was lucky he was going to "let me get away with it this time". My boss (worth millions I imagine) wears plenty of shirts with some sort of r-rated word, image or saying on them all the time. When he pulls up in his Aston Martin you'd probably think he was the mechanic. The point is, why judge a person on their appearance and not their character and actions.. Does this sound familiar? -=gos=-

I have a burner draw and it is definitely has a closed face at address so I'd imagine a R7 driver would as well. -=gos=-

Your 200 yards from the pin....
goslin23 replied to kleraudio's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I suppose I'd use a foot wedge to get it back in the fairway... Just kidding... Good or bad lie, I'm pulling out my 19* Hybrid which usually flies about 190ish with a nice smooth swing and maybe 220 if I try to give it good whack! -=gos=- -
I just got my 1st set of non-generic/non-clone irons - TaylorMade R7 Draw, steel shafts, regular flex. So far so good, I'm hitting them longer and straighter than those knock-off clubs I used to play with. My pro suggested them for me as my slice/right push was pretty bad but these seem to straighten things up pretty well. -=gos=-

For those scratch/low handicappers, was there a specific A-HA! moment in your game or swing that you remember learning? I've had little ones that got me from the 130's to 110's when I first started, but I haven't had any major improvements in the last few years. For example, a good A-HA! moment for me would be to learn how to put backspin on the ball. I've yet to feel what it's like to take the divot in front of the ball. If I take a divot, I guarantee the ball just went about 40% of its intended distance and I probably have a sore finger or 2 from hitting it fat. Or the A-HA! moment of hitting a draw or fade..on purpose! Discuss... -=gos=-

I'm working on focusing on my swing thoughts. I know what I'm supposed to do most of the time, but I usually forget one thing. 2 thoughts usually help me when I'm hitting poorly, "Tempo" and "hit down on the ball". I'm not sure what the "hit down on the ball" swing thought does, but it works for me somehow. I'm also working on chipping around the green. I've noticed over the years that most amateur golfers (including myself) decelerate through the ball around the green because we're afraid to hit it too far, the result being stubbing the club in the ground hitting the ball 2 feet when I meant to hit it 20 yards etc. So, a TON of practice right now in that area! -=gos=-

I'm kinda torn if I'm a golfer or someone who plays golf given the descriptions/criteria in some of these posts. If I'm out playing a round simply for the enjoyment of the game where the score doesn't really matter (it's usually a practice round to work on the things that I've been trying to fix on the range), I'll take a mulligan here or there or improve my lie. On the other hand, if there is any hint of competition or if I'm trying to get a score for handicap reasons, then I play by the rules. Holing all my putts, playing the ball as it lies and adding penalty strokes where necessary. So I guess it depends on the situation whether I'm a golfer or someone who golfs... -=gos=-

I was wondering when someone was going to mention The Caddy, the movie that gave us "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore'". We have The Greatest Game Ever Played on the way from Netflix, can't wait to see it as it looks like it'll be a good one. -=gos=-

I've already posted a couple times, so I figured I'd make it official and say Howdy Y'all! I'm in the Houston area and I just started to take this game a little more serious lately. I've been playing since I was 15 and that makes it 28 years ago that I started. I have no idea what handicap I am, but I normally shoot say...108ish? My best round was an 88 about 10-15 years ago but life got in the way and I'm way out of practice. I got the wife interested in playing and she's had a few lessons and she's still interested. She drags me to the range and wants to hit our Almost Golf Balls in the yard all the time. Got my new Taylormade R7 Draw Irons, a Burner Draw driver, Burner Rescue hybrid 19*, Wilson Staff 3 wood (which I love), 50* Cleveland Wedge and a White Hot #9 putter. I'm ready to read the reviews, grab some tips, shot the breeze and get better at this game. -=gos=-
