  1. Thanks for the quick response. Im up north during the school year, yes. Over Summer's I'm in Southern California, and I really don't mind making the drive down here some weekends during the school year, since it's a good chance to visit friends down here too. I take it you play in these tourneys? What is the general level of play like, and how competitive are the tourneys? I want to know what I'm getting myself into
  2. I really don't doubt it at all. I had read similar reviews of it, but for me that unfortunately wasn't the case.
  3. Maradona. The US has a certain infatuation with Pele, but I feel like Maradona really had the greater impact elsewhere. Also, the element of controversy adds to his "bigness" as a sports star for me. He was both the best and the most controversial--a rare combination. Like Tiger Woods and John Daly wrapped up into one genius football playing godsend.
  4. Interesting idea. I think they missed an opportunity by not translating horizontal/vertical movement into sound as well--a different (ideally less enjoyable) sound could play then, providing feedback for swing flaw on top of the tempo and rhythm. If the price weren't so high I'd consider getting this myself though--improving tempo never hurts.
  5. Id suggest the Hibore XLS simply because I recently was in your exact position, ended up going for the HiBore, and couldn't be more pleased. The Burner was originally the driver I planned to buy, but for whatever reason it's distance was severely lacking...perhaps just a result of my swing, but I consistently lost ~15 yards on driving distance with it compared to the other drivers I was trying. It's the best feeling driver I've ever swung though. Well, now second best behind the HiBore .
  6. Sounds incredible....did a similar trip a couple years back with family, played Kingsbarns and Carnoustie out of the ones you mentioned...Kingsbarns is amaaazing, ey?
  7. Played Pebble and Spyglass last year for my birthday (Best Bday present ever). Pebble was everything I expected--worth every penny, but Ill never pay that much to play there again. Ended up shooting 83, and was pleased. It looks hard on TV, but in person, it's a whole other level of hard. Speaking of which....Spyglass. The second hardest course I've ever played (behind Carnoustie, talk about murder in the form of golf), and it is every bit as good as Pebble for completely different reasons. Spyglass is probably my favorite course I have ever played in terms of design...it's an ingenious course, and every single hole is worthy of being a signature hole at most courses. Shot 86 and was ecstatic. If you can get a stay and play package, Id highly recommend it as a one-time treat that every golfer deserves to experience.
  8. Im willing to bet it's a matter of spinning the ball far too much with the driver. Since you say you're hitting a consistent draw, you may be coming down on the ball steep from the inside and getting a much higher spin rate as a result, meaning less carry and less distance. This would also explain the push fades. If you can, go to a nearby golf store/instructor that has access to a swing analyzer with ball speed and spin information. This will allow you to see if you do in fact have abnormally high ball spin with the driver. Good luck!
  9. Driver: 280 3W: 245 5w: 220 4i:200 5i:190 6i:180 7i:170 8i:155 9i:145 PW:135 GW:125 SW:110 LW:95 Although lately I've been hitting the GW 135 and the PW 140 . Leaves me far too many tweener approaches where I'm left stretching SW or getting too fancy wth the GW.
  10. I break the tee on at least 2/3rds of my drives. I tend to tee it up a bit lower than most, and play at courses with generally firm ground, so that has a lot to do with it. Every golf instructor I've talked to has shunned the "don't break the tee myth", so I'll jump on their bandwagon and say breaking the tee is fine.
  11. Anyone familiar with any good amateur tours in California? Im looking for a way to get in tournaments while in school and busy, so weekend play is ideal. Any tour that has a fair amount of tourneys and reasonable fees would be great. Any and all insight is greatly appreciated!
  12. 71 at Rustic Canyon today. Struck the ball really well and was -4 after 14 before making 3 bogeys in row (those familiar with Rustic will know that this is no rarity, the finishing 5 holes are brutal). Overall quite pleased with how it went, although I still seem to drop a few unnecessary strokes each round that could really mean the difference between consistently under par and struggling around even.
  13. Couldn't agree more with Ben...for LA golf, Ventura County is the place to go. Especially Rustic for value, just finished a round there today and although its not in as good of shape as it used to be, its still the best value in golf.
  14. Hello all, new member here from Sunny Southern California. Im a long time golfer who is hoping to make tracks towards becoming a competitive golfer in the future. Good to be a member of these forums!
  15. Make the jump from a casual almost-scratch golfer to a competitive golfer with tour potential. I figure if I got here without ever taking the game too seriously (its too fun to get stressed about!), there's some potential (I hope).
  16. My blatantly biased opinion...The Simi/Moorpark area, CA. Just far enough away from the LA chaos while still easily reachable. Including: Lost Canyons (Sky & Shadow), Simi Valley--2 amazingly hard and scenic Pete Dye tracks, both top 100 in recent years Rustic Canyon, Simi--top 100 and the best course under 50$ in the US Moorpark CC, Moorpark--Best new course when built, 4.5 stars GD, and always in immaculate condition And of course, there are a ton of other great courses within about a half hour as well.
  17. http://www.moorparkgolf.com Moorpark CC. Perfect blend of challenge, great conditions, and minimal crowds.
