Hitting 2I and 4I Hybrids Help.
kilbyman replied to huskylawyer's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Sounds like you are struggling to shift your weight forward. There is a checklist to make sure this happens. 1) When you turn on your backswing, keep your weight centered, shifting it no further back then the arch of your back foot. 2) End the backswing with a weight shift forward. I would suggest feeling like you are planting on your left foot, which starts the hips moving forwards. From there, the club should be moving on plane and just swing through towards the target. Also, you could be throwing away your wrist angles. If you get the forward weight shift going properly, and whip your club through impact instead of hitting at the ball or scooping it, you should be able to blast those hybrids high and straight. For further clarification, check out the slide the hips and flying wedge threads. -
I'm in. I've only broken 100 twice, so I will be a good test case :)

I believe that one of the bad habits I have that makes my swing difficult to repeat is the fact that I tend to power my swing with my right arm at times, especially when I am swinging out of my shoes. I feel like this gets my arms stuck, causes me to cast ott, and makes my shoulders spin out. Does this make sense? Is there a drill or a fix that will get me engaging my right side instead of the left?

First, I have standard grips on all clubs... So in practice today, I realized if I really squeezed my grip very tight with a ton of pressure (while keeping my arms tension free), my shots with all of my clubs had excellent pure contact and all were slight push draws. If I go to my normal grip pressure (quite a bit looser), I lose my angle on the downswing and tend to cast the club straight into the ground several inches behind the ball, leading to either a fat or topped shot. All I am doing is changing grip pressure. What gives?

Best Tips You've Heard For Slicers?
kilbyman replied to Bill Bowman's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Two things that helped me immensely (they are my swing thoughts): 1.) Don't let the head move off (right of) the ball. 2.) Swing down not out. Specifically, swing my hands below my body and past my left leg as fast as I can, versus out to the ball. I generally slice it when I am trying to hit the ball instead of swing my hands down and through. -
I think your shafts are way too weak.

None of this makes sense, really. His own golfers that he shows are pushing their hips forward even when he says they aren't. The guy who made this video is acting like a poor scientist. Making a theory and using the data to support it, versus gathering data and trying to unify it under a theory. As an aside, I would think holding the arms that straight would screw everything up. And the club restraint thing seems totally bogus.

This is most likely because you have grooved a compensatory move into your swing with good enough timing on the range. Unfortunately, since you don't beat balls on the course like you do on the range, the timing goes away. You need to try to build your swing (like I am doing) by doing things right, not by avoiding a slice/hook/fat shot/whatever. Focus on keeping that left wrist straight through impact and keeping the flying wedge intact until after contact.

Squaring It Up - DVD - anyone seen or heard of this?

Read the Impact Zone by Bobby Clampett instead... this is my advice to all brand new golfers once they learn proper setup. -
Practicing with and without club keeping my weight centered through the backswing and keeping my left arm straight with flat left wrist as long as possible in the swing.

How did you break into single digit HCP?
kilbyman replied to Splifton's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Get the low point of your swing 4" in front of the ball with every club. -
2800 spin with 14 degree launch angle? That's pretty close to perfect... You are a 0.5 I see, so I would go with workability with the two drivers as well. The Titleist is prettier imo.

It seems there are 2 keys for me to hit a powerful swing: use a shoulder turn on the backswing instead of just taking my arms back, and starting down the plane instead of out above it. Seems simple, right? But hard to ingrain for a high capper like myself. I need to make a commitment to practicing this fall until the weather goes bad.

You should get the tour tempo tracks set to dogs barking.

Rolling your wrists is a way to achieve a most excellent 90 degree pull hook, if you ever want that shot in your arsenal. -

So I'm guessing I will shoot around 95 or so at my home course from the golds (67.3/119, par 70). We'll see how it goes... -
In my sig.; it's D4. 45.75"

Is it just me or has TM become the gimmick king of the universe lately? Not that the actual clubs are gimmicks, but the marketing makes me scratch my head a little bit. Their 4i is the same loft as my 3h...

Is your left wrist breaking down?
-
If you don't flip, you won't put the club head into the ground. Your arms do not only extend downward, but outward, and through the shot. You want to contact the ground after the ball. Being a similar handicap, I struggle through what you are talking about. With that being said, the flip refers to the angle of your wrist flipping in a way that instead of your left wrist bowed away from the ball at impact, it is curved in towards the ball. You can see in the above picture that your left wrist curves inward at that position in your downswing. That is the result of trying to help up the ball by "flipping" the club up at the ball, instead of swinging down and through the ball. This is a result quite possibly of what Zeph noted that when you start your backswing, you break your wrists very early so that they are not properly set at the top, and that mixed with the swaying off the ball in the backswing and swinging too flat, you have to flip at the ball to keep from chunking the ground behind the ball. Keeping your wrists straight during the takeaway instead of breaking your wrists at the very beginning, as well as keeping your hips centered and turning over the ball, instead of swaying, will allow your arms to be extended, close together, with the proper forward shaft lean at impact. You will notice that the crispness and accuracy of your shots will greatly improve with extended arms, forward shaft lean, and proper weight shift. Long-winded, but hope that helps a little.

Today I was messing around with this Medicus 5 iron I got on ebay and found that if I fan the club open on the takeaway, I can reverse pivot, jump backwards and shift my weight to my right side, and not break the club... Hmm...

You are swinging over the top, probably due to a poor pivot/shoulder turn/stack/whatever you call it. When you pull your back foot away, you are promoting more of an in to out swing path, which would help to straighten your swing out. Make sure on your shoulder turn you are getting your weight shifted properly.
