Had a good round today! Birdied 3 holes today to push me to -10 Birdied holes #2, 8 and 11
-
So far only -5 but... I've Birdied 2 of the 4 holes I wasn't able to last year. Hopefully will Birdie all 18 this year, maybe an Eagle or 2!
-
Johnny Miller used to do the same with Tiger Woods. It used to drive me crazy then...

Another reason our league doesn't use GHIN is because it relies on individuals to input their own scores. Many members are older and are technologically challenged, or at least claim to be. There's also concern many members won't input their low scores, or won't enter the proper ESC score thus giving them inflated indexes. Therefore, the league only uses it's own scores to compute handicaps.
-
Well in that case, I guess there will always be players better than me!
-
That's precisely why I don't like playing in 4-person scrambles. I prefer 2-man scrambles with NO MULLIGANS because you still have to play well to score.
-
Yes, I know. But this league uses an internal handicap system similar to (but different) from the USGA formula, For reasons out of my control, they decided NOT to use GHIN, thus keeping their member's cost down.
-
We've used a modified Handicap for new members without a GHIN or "equivalent". Keep in mind our system will not calculate a Hcp index until they have 5 rounds, and then it's based off the lowest round differential. So, we use the following method: for first round, play "scratch" after the 1st round, we use 50% of the differential, after 2 rounds, 60% of the lowest differential after 3 rounds, 70% of the lowest differential after 4 rounds, 80% of the lowest differential After the 5th round, the Index is calculated according to the Hcp formula. Nothing official, but it's kept new members from sandbagging an early round. So far it's worked for the last several years.

2024 Golf Related Holiday Gifts - Anything Interesting Received?

Nothing too big for me. Got a box of Pro V1s, and pullovers to keep warm while playing. -
I've seen deer, Elk, turkeys, geese, ducks, turtles, gators, iguanas, beavers, a bobcat and several snakes. I'm sure there's other animals I've forgotten about.

I finished -14 I couldn't birdie 4 of the holes. I hope to do better this year! I finished -14 I couldn't birdie 4 of the holes. I hope to do better this year! I finished -14 I couldn't birdie 4 of the holes. I hope to do better this year!

I came so close to making birdie on 2 of the 4 holes I'm lacking. One lipped out on hole 6. On 15 I had a long right to left breaking putt, and the ball dropped off a few feet before getting to the hole. I did make both par putts, though.

I ended up playing Shingle Creek GC in Orlando bc what I found online said The Magnolia Course had some temporary greens and/or teeboxes. It was just a month after Hurricane Milton, though Orlando was mostly spared. Shingle Creek was only 2.5 miles from our hotel, so very convenient. The entire course was in great shape, and the staff was friendly. I shot a ho-hum 82 from 6300 yds, mostly bc my putting currently sucks. We didn't stay for lunch bc my wife and I had massages booked at the hotel and we were on a time crunch.

I'm going on a business trip to Orlando this October. What courses do you recommend? I'm thinking of playing the Disney Magnolia course. Is it worth it, or are there better options? Price isn't an issue since most of the trip will be covered by work (I only have to pay for golf).

I'm not a fan of hitting driver off the deck as too many things can go wrong. In addition to requiring a perfect lie, and making perfect contact I worry too much about breaking the shaft (in the middle of a round) doing something it wasn't designed for. Plus, I can hit my 3-wood almost as far, and with much more control But a friend of mine (he's now deceased--COVID) was my partner in a 2-man, 2-day scramble tournament. He was the A player in our group. I hit a good drive on a par 5, but that left us with about 250 to the green, with a pond guarding the front of the green. I safely hit a layup to the left, and he hit a driver off the deck, skipping the ball on the water then up to the green, The crazy thing is he called his shot before he hit it, and did it BOTH DAYS!

for me it depends on several things: how much fringe there is (if less than 3-4 ft, i usually putt) the length of grass off the green (if tightly mown, putt > chip) how smooth the fringe is (if bumpy--CHIP!) how much run out i need on the green. Either way i read it like a putt once the balls on the green. If chipping I find my landing spot and read the roll out to the hole from there. That said, I love the creativity the short game demands.

A guy hits a bad shot. His playing partner says, "That reminds me of your old girlfriend. She was also short, fat, and ugly!"

How Many Courses Have You Played?
Maroon88 replied to gortyl's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I have played 210 courses. Maybe more, depending how you count them. Some destinations have more than one course for the same club house. Courses that have 27 holes, I've counted as 1 course; But some have distinct courses. For example I recently went on a golf trip to Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama. We played 3 VERY different courses even though they shared a common clubhouse. -
Does Anyone Own a Melin Cap?

Just say NO -
I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops). The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9. We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

Where Is Your Next Golf Trip Going to Be?
Maroon88 replied to Smidd4's topic in Destinations and Travel
Posted this on another thread, but saw this one so here it is again: Going to Robert Trent Jones Trail next week with a group of guys, 15 total. This will be my first trip to RTJ. Playing "Cambrian Ridge" one day, then "The Senator", "The Legislator", and "The Judge" on Capitol Hill. Anyone played these courses? Are there other courses we should try to play while there? -

I live in Texas and have traveled to both cities. For me, the choice is not even close! My choice would be Las Vegas especially with all the night life. I loved Bali Hai and would definitely recommend it. I'll likely play there again the next time I'm in LV. Bear's Best was not as enjoyable but I got paired with a single (member) who left after 9 holes. We were behind a slow 4-some that wouldn't let us through. After he left, they still didn't let me through. I tried to join the 3-some behind us, but they just said "go ahead" so I played the back 9 by myself stuck behind a 4-some. The greens were also very firm (didn't hold any of my approach shots which I normally stop after first bounce). The sand was different on many holes: some with lots of sand, some with hard pan just under the surface, and some with black volcano sand. I heard Rio Secco is nice, and more reasonably priced.
