Is it too late for me to get seriously into golf?
Golf'nBiker replied to JohnGalt's topic in Golf Talk
I didn't start playing until I was 54..I'll be 56 in AUG! If I shoot above an 85, I'm a bit 'unsettled' w/my play. I agree, if Dad has that much experience, take advantage of it, I'm certain he'd enjoy spending time w/you on the course/range, I know I would w/my son. Also, I disagree w/getting fitted for clubs. After approx 8 months of playing, I got fitted..or so I thought, however, I had no sort of repetable or consistant swing, and now I have a set of PING G10's sitting in stogage. -
How do you mark your ball for identification?
Golf'nBiker replied to SergioFan23's topic in Golf Talk
For ID purposes, I fill in three dimples w/a green sharpie to shape a shamrock, than add a lil 'twig'. -
It is do-able....this aint no fairy tale: TUE: #1 368, 2d shot... 62 yd to the pin #5 451, 2d shot... 158 to the pin #13 369,2d shot... 79 to the pin #14 470, 2d shot...148 to the pin #18 462 2d shot...173 to the pin Granted it's 95* and we hadn't had any rain since the tornados in APR

B-CON, I tend to agree w/you. Mats can indeed be a learning tool.....by using your ears. If you hear whack-thud. ya done good. if you hear thud-whack..ya MISSED! mats can be a help if you will allow them too!

Looking for New irons...need advice
Golf'nBiker replied to Tmurry14's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I don't have any idea what the heck happened w/me, but I went from Ping G10 to W/S Di11. SERIOUSLY??? Yup, serioulsy! I tested them out at Golf Smith (?) and they felt so good to handle...I like them very much...seriously!!! -
I play in a Seniors dog-fight on TUE and THUR and the 'rule' is anyone over the age of 70 can play from the forward (Red) tees. There are a couple of guys that drive the greens on #4, 252, #9 286, and #16 270...every frik'n week! Its actually fun to watch, but the skins..well, not so much. So to the OP...I have no idea. Tom Watson is still a freak at his age and I have no comparison to what he used to drive or hit his irons when he first started out. I do kno tho, that we have some guys that hit a 7 iron to a 135 par 3 while others are still whacking PW or 9 irons!

UPDATE: Whata funny game we're hooked on. Putted well today, had just two 3 putts, however couldnt't hit a GIR for love nor money. 13 bogies, 5 pars!! Guess it's time for chipping practice!!
-
4 bogey's 1 bird. Of the bogies, only 1 was a 3 putt. That forward press seems to work well, and the 'stroke' is comfortable. Never shot a 75 before! Was 1 over at the turn...thanx again fellas! Going back for more on FRI

All I've got to say is the Ka-nuck-leheads didnt show up tonight! I'm a Sabres, Bills and METS fan so you kno who I'm pulling for in the CUP!
-
OK guys, tomorrow is show time. Practiced 9 holes today working on the lag putt. Gotta admit, w/out the visual aids of the tees for a 3" ciircle sure changes things. Will let y'all kno how it worked out, again, a very hearty thank you to those who suggested tips.

Best Sunscreen For Sensitive Skin???
Golf'nBiker replied to topnotch's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Might check that out myself. Been using a 'kids' SPF 50 from AVON, got a couple 'cornflakes' on my ears which I must protect. -
Agreed. hated to see you go against that kid as well...he's likeable. Stay well, secure the perimeter and take care of those troops, come home safely. 1SG USA/Ret

Guten Tag, Jim! Welcome. Sounds to me like getting on a golf course is as much a task as getting on the road in Germany..meaning acquiring a drivers license.
-
Welcome to the forum. Thanx for your service from an old Army guy. I have a regular playing partner (USMC Ret.) who travels to Lejeune quite often.

My wife does not play, but my G/F does. Kidding ofcourse. I play some of the most relaxing golf when she will 'caddy' for me, altho, it's driving the cart and keeping me company. Bought my grand-daughter a putter for her K-Garten grad gift, she drives the cart as well and putts (better than I do) when I reach the green.

I become wore out whacking ball after ball on the range and going thru my entire bag. 2 tokens, 60-65 balls, PW, 52*, 56* 60* and driver for practice. Pre round, 1 token, same clubs.
-
Again, thanx to all for your input. I have been making a 'circle' w/8 tees around the hole to 3 feet. Taking 2 large paces from the circle and placing another tee, 2 more paces from that tee and yet another. From each tee position I am putting 4 balls into the circle, finish by cupping and repete. i also have tried the forward press of the club and accelerating thru the shot. Seems to be working...I'll continue more regularly w/my putting practice. Putting was beginning to be a drag...now its becoming a LAG!!

JETSFAN, not long ago I was in a similar situation. Mine began by listining to fellow golfrers. long confusing story short, I was flip-flopping from a STIFF flex to a super stiff flex and really was not sure what I was seeking. I went to a shop and swung 6 different drivers. 3 stiff, 3 regular flex..discovered my swing speed and the best 'results' on the monitor in the reg. flex for one club. The gentleman who owns the shop allowed me to use a demo for a few days, and now I am the owner of and very happy w/my driver...Cleveland XL270

CTP, yessir, agressive enough to a foot-18 in past if I miss. NDFan, you are right on..I havent believd I could hit a bushel basket lately. Which has only been the past couple weeks. I was very confident that if on the GIR, I WILL make no worse than par. JACK and Paladins, thanx for the input...I'll practice thru the weekend as my next round isn't until Tue. thanx fellas.
-
JS, thanx for the input. I'll give that a try. My attempted fixes have been 2 rubberbands in the putter to ensure a center strike, a band aid on the putter face, tucking the elbows to the body, etc. As you kno, approaching the ball w.the "how am I going to miss this one"..dosent help any either! ;-)
-
I kno I'm not a regular poster here, but Im sure some may benefit from my request. My putting has gone to hell in a hand basket. i have lost all confidence and can not judge distance-speed, etc. The greens are/have been somwehat irregular, but all players have the same dis-advantage. I either blow it past the hole or come up quite short. my usual 'play' is an inch take away per every step to the hole from my ball...meaning 3 paces from ball to hole, 3" take away/follow thru.. I hit GIR on 8 holes and had 24 putts. 3 pars, 1 double bogey! ANy advice to re-gain some confidence or drill to geestimate speed will sure be appreciated. thanx in advance.

Ball Choice / Compression Question
Golf'nBiker replied to erock9174's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Just an observation...I play in a "SR's League" on Thursdays, and many of these old fatrs walk the course, and several spend much time fishing balls out of the water or hunting the tree line enroute to the greens. They play ANYTHING they can find, and maintain regularly. It's just my opinion, but at the level 'we' play, cost dosent mean better ball striking..Tiger NIKE, Phil/Ernie CALLAWAY, Freddie BRIDGESTONE..etc..etc..etc. Preference or endorsements? -
Shaft looks like a banana
Golf'nBiker replied to Golf'nBiker's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
So it seems that my 'stiff' shaft on the Cobra isnt really a STIFF shaft at all. A friend loaned me an old driver of his which is indeed a stiff shaft and also a 10.5 degree loft, where as mine was 9. I must say..what a differance..much higher launch however it seem to have lost a little in length. Thats is just fine w/me tho to play in the short grass is much more interesting when on a regular basis. thanx for all the input (facetious). -
Is what I've been hearing for a little while. I use the Cobra F Speed LD driver. It has a stiff shaft and when I swing, appearantly, it bends way too much. i say way too much, because my hits are either well liked, when everything comes together or way to the right. My avg. drives are 250-270 range. I do understand that at times my hands get out faster and do not allow the clubhead to catch up, resulting in an ugly slice, but others offer observations that the flex might be too much. I consider my swing 'repeatable', and was considering a extra still shaft. Any ideas or suggestions before I venture out to a launch monitor or demo-day? EDIT: After looking at Eric's "Ball Flight" diagram, my misses are the "H", push, or "I" push fade, assuming that the letters furthest to the right and left of the diagram is the width of the fairway.
