  1. the better question is, what makes 13 in a row special? and what's the name of winning the last 7 tricks in hand #1 and the first 6 tricks in hand #2?
  2. fair enough; even the card game says all tricks in "one hand" - nothing about in a row. I think that adds to my point. It's about the most possible; nothing to do with in a row.
  3. well, if there are three singles in a row, I'd expect them to join up in to one group rather than to expect to each play through me. Seems very inefficient for them to be seperate groups. I'd also blame the pro shop for allowing that. A more likely scenario is a group sees a single at 3, 7, 11, 15; in which case, I don't think your timing would be off if your group follows the procedure I outlined earlier in this thread which is to create a foursome for 1.5 holes.
  4. Grand Slam is a baseball term. One swing of the bat scores 4 runs. The most possible. The most possible majors in a season is 4. The fact they're in a row is more coincidental than necessary. Grand Slam = the most possible. There's a lot of pressure as a batter when you step to the plate with the bases loaded. One can't birdie them all if they don't birdie the first. I question if the build up to the 2000 US Open is the same as the pressure to win the Masters then the US Open then the Open then the PGA. I'm sure there was pressure, but nothing historical leading up to them like it seemed for Spieth at this year's Open. I didn't follow golf then, so please correct me regarding the hype/build up to those championships. I don't think there was any outsized pressure on Spieth at this year's Masters and not much at this year's US Open, but there was tons of build up and tons of hype at the Open. The PGA would've been crazy had he claimed the Open title as well. Someone please inform me.
  5. No, definition is all four in a year imo.
  6. Here's the "let them play through" procedure. 1. Hit your tee shot 2. Walk to your ball. 3. When they arrive to the tee, wave them up. 4. Spend 1 minute watching their tee shots, so you don't get hit. 5. Play your shot while they drive to their balls 6. Watch their approaches. 7. Tell them to go ahead while you walk to your ball 8. Wait for them to putt out 9. Do a professional putt out 10. Walk to next tee. Wait for them to hit approach shots and then enjoy your leisurely round worst case, you played in a 3-some for 1.5 holes.
  7. Single digit handicap still a requirement?
  8. interesting that Spieth plays AP2s. anyone else notice that? He doesn't play blades; I wonder why other golfers don't do the same.
  9. dang, how did I miss this.
  10. I thought this exact same thing when I read the GD article. I'm positive he or someone that works with him has read LSW and cribbed your findings. Best form of flattery?
  11. Not surprised the course you work at is struggling. $20 to ride along? Is your 2nd paragraph suggesting you think people are lying and just trying to get a free greens fee? My takeaways from your comments in this thread: no one ever does this (just rides along), but when it does occur, it is exorbitantly expensive for the course.
  12. if it's immaterial to the course's bottom line, then why charge for it in the first place? As mentioned, this is very shortsighted on the part of the course. Fortunately, I live in PHX, so courses/choices are abundant. Course could make their money back with additional golfers and the snack cart person + 19th hole + a golfer has the option of playing more golf by being able to have their sig other accompany them. I suppose the course could feel like they have you by the balls since you drove there and possibly even pre-paid for your tee time. Unless this policy is posted on the website, money grab imo.
  13. B-ball is "cheaper" but you need to have at least 5 others for a decent game. Golf doesn't require that. Just shooting hoops is more comparable to pitching/chipping/putting, which is mostly free. Golf is the one sport where one can materially emulate the game played by the pros. Pads and refs and # of people are not cheap for American football. Soccer requires a lot of people, but may be the cheapest of all sports. B-ball needs indoor gym and people. Most people don't make that apples to apples comparison. Golf is fine tho. Critical mass needed for golf is there. Industry probably needs to consolidate, but other than that average golfer has nothing to worry about imp.
  14. when you're annoyed the course doesn't have yardage books
  15. I've already started to adjust my game to avoid the penalty shots as a priority. Primarily b/c a shot in to the desert is worse than a water hazard as the water is just a stroke rather than stroke and distance. I'm just curious if there were any statistics on desert vs parkland vs links etc.
  16. How does the particular golf course being played impact some of the conventional wisdom I've read on this site. For example, hitting driver 250 but off target is better than hitting hybrid 200 in the fairway. I ask because in PHX, we play desert golf primarily. The desert, especially at the nicer courses, is often very penal. If you're off of the fairway, even if you find your ball, it is likely an unplayable lie. In addition, your drop from said unplayable lie is unlikely to put you in a position where a full swing is possible. For this reason, many courses have a local "desert" rule. This allows one to play the desert as a lateral hazard. This rule is outside the rules of golf. I've played the majority of my golf in Arizona, so feedback on how parkland style and other style course strategy differ if they do.
  17. I agree with those who don't like instructional advice on the course. I am in that camp as well. However, a buddy I play with every now and then seems to request feedback on his swing/line/etc during the round. I try to avoid giving him my thoughts b/c I wouldn't want someone giving me advice. Again, he seems to want the feedback, so occasionally give him my thoughts. I guess I'll just ask him, but anyone want advice from people you know on your swing mid-round?
  18. Same policy as at Pebble Beach. I played their big 3 last week and didn't stay at the resort. I actually scheduled Pebble the day of; not as many people eager to pay $495/round as I thought.
  19. You were able to play 3 rounds of golf in one day? Serious question.
  20. Sun Mountain Golf X-Strap Sunday Bag - just saw it for $40 at one of the online golf retailers. It has held up pretty well thus far. I've put probably 10 rounds on it since I got it in December. One pocket is big enough for a rain jacket and small umbrella. The other pocket fits my gloves, tees, balls with room to spare. Has a caribiner for my towel and rangefinder.
  21. I walk as much as possible. I got a
  22. any of you walk and carry guys feel like your shoulders, right shoulder in particular, are irritated by the putting on and taking off of your bag?
  23. I'm headed to Pebble in a few weeks. I rented a house nearby as opposed to staying at a Pebble property. So far, I've been successful booking rounds at Spanish Bay and Spyglass. Big test is getting a tee time on Pebble. I figure worst case I save $495.
  24. You guys wear this model with no socks?
  25. I heard/read somewhere Butch told Tiger "you're swing is perfect; just maintain this forever." Tiger didn't like that; he wanted/needed to believe he could always get better. I don't know how true that is, but just adding to the discussion.
