Please help me cure my draws and minor hooks!
abraxas replied to Dolphinswin's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
i struggled with this problem early on this season for me, i was bringing the club too far to the inside on the backswing i think i may have been over-rotating my right wrist on the way back i fixed it by concentrating on just turning my left shoulder to my chin and not thinking about my right side at all -
as soon as my left shoulder hits my chin, i think to myself "okay slow down" i feel as if i'm pausing but i think my wrists hinge naturally at this point as i start my downswing i used to have a longer backswing where the clubhead just dies out before i begin my hips but i feel a lot more in control with the perceived pause at the top

Playing the back tee's, when to move
abraxas replied to Ctp722's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
i started playing from the back tees late last season and early this season distance isn't the issue for me... it's more an issue of consistency so i'll play from the back when it's quiet and i can play longer shots most times i play the middle tees -
unsolicited advice when you're having a couple bad holes esp from someone who isn't that much better than you!

Any suggestions with balls?
abraxas replied to ChrisFav's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
yea, i agree with everyone that a ball cannot help you with a slice BUT i would try the e6 as for nike balls, i just tried out the PD soft that i got for christmas secret santa and i was pleasantly surprised...felt pretty good others that ive tried and liked are precept laddie, srixon soft feel, and topflite gamer v2 (for similar price range) -
3 wood from the tee: when is it time to stop!!
abraxas replied to JohnnyGuitar's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
i'd say use the 3W for most driving holes. but if there's an opportunity to pull out the driver where the fairway is fairly wide and forgiving, give it a go! there's no practice like teeing off on the course. i always feel like no matter how much you practice at the range, nothing will simulate how you feel on the teebox. plus, what do you really have to lose?? i know some people always harp on your score being the priority, but i'd rather get worse scores in the short-term and learn how to hit shots on the course and eventually go low once you get better. -
can't seem to hit any of my clubs of the deck
abraxas replied to michfootball97's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
i don't know how you've been practicing but for me, i've been hitting off of mats all winter. the first few times on the course are always the most frustrating. i think i train myself to not hit down as much on my irons as to not hurt myself with the mats. and then on the course, i hit A LOT of thin shots, forgetting what it was like to hit off of grass and letting my swing bottom out. not sure if that's the case with you? but the advice about focusing an inch in front of the ball is very helpful in general. -
so i had a long break from work today and stopped by the local golf shop couldnt help but be completely intrigued by the cleveland classic have to say i wasnt the biggest fan of the appearance but it def looks better in person i decided to whack some balls with it compared to the g20 (i play the g15 now) took me a while to get used to it considering how deep the face was ive always used a more shallow face driver considering im not very consistent and need a lot of forgiveness BUT after a while, i didnt want to put it down! it felt so much more solid and powerful than the ping i mean, granted i was maybe getting 5-8 yards more from it (which was really surprising!) ive never used a cleveland driver before but this completely caught me off guard i am very impressed and would recommend this to anyone

Looking for a new Iron set for 18 handicapper
abraxas replied to Fishbones's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
when i started out i played ping g10 irons which were just great but as my handicap dropped to about 20-22 i switched to mizuno mx300s partly because i just wanted to buy new clubs also i felt like i was outgrowing them (in hindsight, so not true) but at 18 i think you'll be just fine playing these or anything similar i'd suggest game improvement but dont rule out the forgiving players irons -
NXT tour or Bridgeston B330 RX or e6?
abraxas replied to Birdman2's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
i actually just played a round using the B330 and e6 the B330 feels so much better and softer, esp off the driver the e6 was almost 5-10 yards longer tho -
Adams Idea Pro Black super hybrid
abraxas replied to walfice's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
i just picked one up last week. i was deciding between the super hybrid, V3, and the superfast 2.0 the first thing i noticed among all three was the super hybrid just felt heavier and more solid according to launch monitor i hit this one the farthest and least "left" which ive been fighting with my hybrid anyway, i prefer a heavier club so this felt perfect for me and the head really doesnt look that much bigger than the others fwiw i got it with the matrix ozik shaft -
just wanted to resurrect this thread.... was wondering if you guys choked/gripped down on your putter for shorter putts or maintained the location of your hands no matter the length of putt
-
i agree with most of the replies on how to set up for the putt but i was wondering when youre about to swing, where are you focusing? top of the ball? behind the ball? even in front of the ball?

What do you say when you need someone to shank it?
abraxas replied to TitleistLefty's topic in Golf Talk
this is the funny thing about golf in any other sport, trash talking is part of the game oh wait...golfs not a sport -
ohh this is an interesting thread. ive always assumed better players carried around 3 balls since they seldom lose 'em. when i first started playing, i used to carry around 20 balls out of fear that i'd lose them all...nothing more embarrasing and stressful than being down to a single ball with several holes to play! these days i carry around 8 (never realized how heavy balls were!) and yet when i think of putting in only 6 or so, the fear makes me throw in a couple extra, haha

Not Enough Air Under Ball When Using Driver
abraxas replied to huskylawyer's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
i thought i was the only one with this problem! my swing speed is in the mid 90s according to my fitting so i was fitted with a 12 degree driver with a regular shaft. i dont know what it is but my trajectory is still pretty low. i feel like my swing plane is pretty flat with my driver so could that be the issue? i have the same standard setup that you have... its frustrating for me as well only because i dont have this issue with any other club including my fairway wood how odd AND frustrating, grrr -
i think his drill was to keep the right foot back but on the toes... but i agree, his point was to reinforce a strong left side
-
so i was practicing different things this week at the range and decided to hit some balls with my right leg/foot back about 6-12 inches (right-handed). i remember reading this drill either on this site, magazines, or on tv. and for whatever reason, i seemed to make better contact, especially after making a couple fat shots. what id like to know is what aspects of the swing is this reinforcing/helping or trying to eliminate. and would it be detrimental in the long run if i continued to play like this on the course - what would happen?

i actually got my brother-in-law one of these for christmas, the new model. i have to say, the new layout of the top is a bit awkward. we were messing around arranging the clubs in different ways but i personally wasnt comfortable. he on the other hand LOVED it! he rarely carries so it fits perfectly on his push cart and its really not as heavy as people say (c'mon 6.5 lbs vs 4 lbs, does that really make such a big difference on your back?) as for everything else, its one of the coolest bags ive seen when i was shopping for it. the other 14-way bags just "seemed" cheap in the materials they used. the clubs slide in-n-out without a hitch. also there are so many little conveniences in this bag i couldnt believe it. and most importantly....its just a sweet looking bag with no labels or markings anywhere

nevets88, thanks for that link!! thats pretty much what i was looking for. i figure it would be nice to see someones swing whos stature is similar to yours (short/stocky, tall/lanky) and compare yours to theirs. and every time i try to work on something specific, its nice to have that reference handy. ALSO, i went to the bookstore to check out some books and ended up flipping through the stack and tilt swing book by bennett. i have to say the pictures are really cool and illustrative. i ended up ordering it online, even if i dont end up adopting all their principles, it just seems like a well thought out and helpful book.
-
anyone know of any books that best shows pictures of all different aspects of the swing? similar to what golf digest does every month... it would be nice to see tour players and where their positions are such as wrist/shoulder/even feet at backswing, impact, finish. not so much instruction but simply illustrations

i feel like im in a similar situation as you...ive only broken 90 once and have flirted with it a bunch of times. BUT although i realize how important the short game and putting is, the times i have played well was because i was driving/striking relatively well (par 3s included) by that i mean i was either in the fairway or close to it and i had a very playable 2nd shot. just having a chance to get on the green... most of the times i play, i usually find myself OTB or having to just punch out on several holes and that just adds strokes and frustration. trickles down to the rest of the game
