Slippery grips on new Mizuno irons?
mattttt25 replied to glbrum's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Huh.... same issue as the OP. New Mizuno JPX 800 Pro's. I hate the grips, very slick. But love the clubs... -
Just stumbled on this and I'm sure its a major flaw. No idea how long I've had it. During my backswing, my head raises in elevation. I'm sure its caused by an incorrect rotation of the shoulders, with the left shoulder pushing my head up. My playing partner says it comes up a lot and then drops during my downswing. We worked on this the other day, with him holding a shaft on top of my head and literally keeping me from raising it. First, it felt very awkward, almost like i was bending over farther than address. But what I quickly noticed was that I was making better contact with the ball and even taking divots 2-3 inches in front of the ball. Before I make too much of this, wanted to ensure this is important within the swing. So is a rising head bad? Btw, a recent video of Ricky Fowler showed his head to maintain the same elevation through his swing (although it did back away from the ball considerably). Thanks-

This is my home course, about three miles from my house: http://www.renditionsgolf.com/ Every hole is a replica of a course that has hosted a major. For me, its enjoyable walking up to a tee box and looking out on a hole that I've seen on TV. Its exciting playing a lively round with friends and coming up on amen corner and having someone in the lead come apart or battle through. I doubt many will travel far to play this St. Andrews replica, but golfers in MI and surrounding states will most likely enjoy it.

Thanks for the advice. I went with the gap that matches the set. Stopping at 4 iron, I do have room to add two wedges. Yesterday I played with just the 50 gap and a 60. I was ok on most holes, but I will probably add a 54 or 56 to the mix.

Well, I didn't obsess over the decision, just went and bought a set of new JPX 800 Pro on Saturday. Absolutely love the looks. With Dynalite shaft, the clubs feel very balanced in my hands. Played a round yesterday and I think I made a great decision for me. Didn't play that well, but it wasn't the clubs. They appear to be very forgiving. On a par 3, I took a terrible swing that that left a divot pattern that started 2 inches behind the ball, with the toe just barely catching the ball. The ball went straight and came up only 15 yards short. Very happy with the decision and look forward to many years of enjoyment. Btw, with the amped up lofts, I went with 4 thru Gap, which almost matches my old 3 thru P.

Hands: the key to straight shots
mattttt25 replied to bunkerputt's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
It will be interesting to see the responses after that video. Like much of golf and the dialog on this site, communication is our enemy. I knew what you were saying. Is it proper to say the hands are the key? I won't argue that point, but maybe its better to say that you need loose wrists, little tension, and must snap the club through impact. I struggle with this same thought- I look at all these videos and pictures and focus on the positions. I then try to hit every position (about a hundred of them) while still trying to have a fluid swing. We all know it doesn't work. -
Leadbetter uses a drill in which you take a very close stance (feet almost touching), and take easy swings. Helps with balance, shoulder turn and swing plane. You just focus on nice easy contact. After 5-10 good shots, you assume a normal stance and hit away. It has helped me in the past when I "lost what my arms were supposed to do". Could be a variation of it.

The 1-iron sits at home in the bedroom, awaiting someone that may come through a window one day. I currently carry driver, 3-wood, 2-hybrid, 3-P, gap and sand. But these new clubs and stronger lofts just suck. My current P is 48, but now looking at a set with a P at 45. Hence, my question.
-
Looking at a new set of clubs that finish with a 45 degree pitching wedge and 50 degree gap wedge. If I were to add one more wedge, what would it be? Thinking 54 or 56, but not sure which. Another option would be to scrap the gap wedge and pick up a 52 and 58. Thoughts?

My local shop has a few heads, but no complete sets yet. I may go hit them today. Anyone have any experience yet? Forged, game improvement from Mizuno.

Thanks. The reason it matters to me is that I lost my W3 (gap wedge), which was 52. My pitching wedge is 48, so having a 52 worked well. I am ready to go out and replace the 52 wedge. But.... I am also considering replacing my irons later on. If a new set comes with a strong pitching wedge, then its going to throw the gap wedge out of wack.

Easy question... are most 48 degrees? Thanks-

Sorry, didn't read the OP or any responses. But, lots my W3 2 weekends ago. 12 yr old matched set of Tommy Armours. Love the clubs. Mean a lot to me. And now I'm missing one. Called the course, haven't found it yet. Its killing me.

Throw every other suggestion out the door. Under Armour briefs will change your life. Trust me on this...

What the F is this world coming to? I am so sick of people coming on this and other threads and whining about harsh rules. I don't care what you respond with, its a clear sign that you're one of those people that feels there is an excuse for everything. What bothers me the most is I see this type of mentality everywhere these days. Zero accountability, if I whine and complain about a rule I just broke, someone will agree with me. Sorry for the rant, but my personal upbringing along with my military service taught me to know the rules, follow the rules, and STFU when I break the rules.

Whenever P90X comes up, I always throw Insanity in the mix. Same type of in home workout program, made by the same people. Only difference, no props (weights, chairs, ec) needed. I don't think the workout is any easier, just different. Will absolutely kick your *ss, help you cut fat, build muscle, and increase endurance.

Sounds like 6 hr energy drink marketed to golfers.

We had a course at USNA. Very nice. Tons of colleges and courses in the DC Metro area.

Yesterday, 40% of our shots were like that or worse. Lots of rain the day before. Lift, clean and place.

I played a round with a scratch golfer who after quietly observing my first 5 holes, started pointing out faults and talking me through them. We worked on a handful of items over the rest of the round. By the end, I was making very good contact and getting distance I'm used to when I'm playing well, and even exceeding that on several shots. But for the first time in my golfing career, almost every shot was a straight pull. Very little movement on the ball (occasional slight fade or draw). I did check alignment and it did not appear to be the issue. Without seeing the swing, can anyone offer a few ideas on what causes a straight pull? Thanks-

Skill tops everything else. Strength, flexibility, and equipment is all secondary.

I think the first key is to really focus and watch the ball land. Pick out several landmarks and make sure you know where you are headed. I struggled with this in the past and once I really focused and made sure I knew where I was headed, I lost less balls. Second thing- check your distance. Either you're hitting it father or shorter than you think. Unfortunately, it's usually shorter.
