  2. I'm pulling for the Notre Dame Blonde... and the older guy. And basically anyone on the Irish Guy's team. We'll see if anyone else stands out as the show goes forward. A few usually do. Looking forward to each episode. DVR set to record the entire season. Don't tell the wife, but it is HIGH on the list of timers, outranking many other shows in case of a conflict with another attempted recording.
  3. Been using the same irons since the mid 1990's... and have no reason to change. I'm admittedly biased and do love my irons. What was called "midsize" back in the day is pretty much a standard sized clubhead today. Great forged feel as well and I'm good to go. New irons... or use that money to basically play for free all year(s)? No brainer. I was going to post that Wilson Staff has won more majors than any other brand, but was beaten to it. 59 is a ton. My feelings on their current status in the game is this. They fell behind on some technological advances, primarily perimeter weighted clubs when those took off 20-25 or so years ago. Once the industry blasted past them, they responded with an economy line of irons, found just about everywhere - and called them "Wilson." It's akin to buying a baseball glove at Wal-Mart. The technology they did come up with were mostly duds - i.e. the "Fat Shaft." Their forged clubs have always been great though...
  4. A quarter inch to a third of an inch is what i have seen. Some grips, like WINN have a little more substance to the butt end of the grip. Next time you are in Golf Galaxy (or any other shop) ask your friendly re-grip specialist to show you a couple of the grips he has cut off that day (and most certainly discarded). They are probably only a few steps away in the trash can, and cut open lengthwise.
  5. Very good. You're following along nicely! Now... if a player makes a mistake with his scorecard - with or without intent - is the penalty the same? Nice username.
  6. He could probably beat a large majority of the players here... as could most of the Big Breakers.
  7. Oh lord... not this again. You don't have to break a rule maliciously, with intent, or even gain an advantage to be penalized. There was a guy with a scorecard at the Masters once.... look him up. The COURSE/PGA can set up the course any way they darn well please, from fairway width, green speed, lenght of rough etc. as well as determining which areas inside or outside the ropes are to be played as hazards or not. They CLEARLY communicated that hazards outside the ropes are hazards. Dustin Johnson ingonred that communication, which was #1 on the rules sheet if I recall. Whether or not an advantage was gained is completely irrelevant... as the degree of advantage gained (or lack thereof) is not part of the rule book, nor should it be.
  8. Does not surprise me in the slightest.... If you want to shake your head in amazement/mocking/laughter... search "Scotty Cameron Damascus" You've been warned....
  9. Other - I've been a single digit handicap for 20+ years without a single lesson in my life Cost too much - For the cost of 5-10 lessons I can play how many rounds? Time - Wife and three kids... it's just not a good use of my time. I'd rather play instead, but only after everything else is done! (work, kids sports/events, things around the house, etc.)
  10. Same irons for me since 1995. I don't think I will be changing anytime soon....
  11. Now you have four putted! I never suggested anyone add a bunch of weight. Your suggestion that experimenting with lead tape on a putter (which THOUSANDS of PGA Touring Pros have done in competition) will make a putter "far out of balance and a poor tool" is ludicrous. The guy wants something IN BETWEEN a heavy putter and a standard putter. It's really quite simple. I putted with lead tape on my putter for 20 years. Made it down to a 4 cap, was a walk on at a Division I school, won High School Tournaments. When I changed to my current Scotty Cameron, the putter was HEAVIER, but the swingweight was different than my previous putter. Solution? Lighter grip (the lightest Cameron grip there is, the Studio Design), therfore changing the swingweight, putting the feeling of more weight back into the putter head. Felt a lot like my previous putter. You may work in a Tour Van and know your stuff... if so, enlighten us.
  12. Grips causing a major distance loss? Ummm no. Never heard of anything remotely close. Sure, the grip may change the swingweight a 1/4 of a point or something, but 12 yards with a short iron? Call me skeptical. Something else has to be going on. Ball, wind, etc. If you are claiming distance loss on the range, forget it. Those balls have been hit 1,000,000 times each.
  13. Hello from Indy's northside...
  14. That's the internet equivalent of the three-putt....
  15. I would avoid a larger grip, unless you have large hands or have used a large grip in the past. Why?? Increasing the weight of the club in the grip end reduces the feel of weight of the head, changes the feel of the stroke quite a bit, and DECREASES swingweight. A better option in my mind is to put lead tape on the head of the new putter. You can put it on the bottom of most putters easily, and hide it so that you do not see it at address if that is an issue for you. Or you can stick it all over the place... up to you. Experiment with different amounts of tape first. It is quite sticky, so apply it in various amounts with a little scotch tape or masking tape FIRST --- without removing the backing and usng the adhesive on the lead tape itself. Hit a few putts in the house, or at the practice green. Add another piece, take a piece off, etc. until you get what feels right for you. Then remove the backing from the lead tape and apply it. Good luck!
  16. Wow, I was way off. I thought the question was.... Trap totally fillled with water, where do you drop could be answered by saying you should just drop em in the woods and pee there.
  17. I concur. My pockets have tees and a marker in the front right, and nothing in the back pockets. Front Left pocket is useless, you can't feel what you are grabbing for (tee, penny) with a glove on. I also don't like it when people can't mark their ball properly. One hole its behind the ball, next hole it's on the side, next hole it's the other side. I don't complain or anything, just notice it and wonder who taught them how to mark their ball? Then I silently thank my grandfather for introducing me to this grand game...
  18. I think we are disagreeing on the definition of a "different" swing. If you have 100 yards to the pin from a level fairway... do you have the ball in the same position in your stance as you do with a driver? Most people don't. To me, the ball position is a big enough difference to equate to a different "swing." That said, there is not much difference for me between that same wedge and, say, a 5 iron from the fairway on the next hole. I also have a swing thought "swing it like a 5 iron" when I have my 14 degree hybrid in my hands, so for me, it's Driver swing, and then everything else pretty much the same.
  19. I change my own grips. Always. I never, EVER, use the alignment aid on the golf ball when putting. I must have a clean look at address. I will give away balls I find 99% of the time. Most of them are not "up to par". I'm pretty picky, don't lose many that I do have, and am good for a year or two at least. Srixon Z Star currently. I must have clean grooves, and take a tee to them after each shot. First spit and then a towel though. I usually do NOT tee the ball up on a par 3. Sometimes I will do the "Laura Davies" and make a mini diviot with the toe of the club, held "upside down" and play from the slightly raised bump of turf. Sometimes I will just place the ball down all pretty like and play away. Especially for the short irons. I have to get to about a 6, maybe a 5 iron or longer to tee it up. Even then, it's not teed up much at all. I'm a digger and don't want that thing above the ground much at all. Divots like a 1977 Playboy. Yeah!!!! I hate it when people attached their sweat soaked gloves to the frame of the golf cart. It's not overly disgusting or anything, I think's it's just "hacker"-ish or "beginner"-ish I have never owned a ball retriever in my life. If I do get one wet, if I can't reach it with an iron, it wasn't meant to be mine anymore. You can have it. Get your telescopic moron stick out of your bag! Once a ball has been played, it's done. I might use it on the par 3 course nearby when playing with my two sons, but other than that it's pretty much done. The incredible durability of the Srixon Z Star is challenging this, and it is VERY difficult to determine a brand new rock from one that I just hit 75-85 times. I just don't know what to do. I NEVER aim for a 100, 150, 200 etc yard marker on the range. Range balls go absolutely nowhere, and I don't want my head clouded by distances from shots hit on the range. Instead, I'll hit short irons TOWARDS the 200 marker/flag, and try to hit them on-line with it... looking for accuracy of line only, not distance. Same for longer irons... I fly em right over the 100 or 150 with zero concern for distance, only LINE. I play forged irons, so the feel of a well struck shot tells me all I need to know about distances and carry both on the range and on the course. When given the option of a pitch with a sand wedge or a bump and run with an 8 iron around the green, the 8 comes out every chance I get. It's deadly. I paint filled my Scotty Cameron with colors of my own choosing (Master's Green and White) and did the same with my Vokey Sand Wedge. Cart girls usually dig it. I tend to screw with other groups when their carts are parked next to ours. Today I said more than loud enough for the strangers one hole over to hear "I can't believe you hit a wedge 155 yards!!!" in the direction of my playing partner. He took the bait and said, "One groove low though." It's ok to have a beer on the course at 10 am. Not so much at home. I have moved sleeves around in a several boxes of balls to get a dozen that are #1, #2 and #3 only. Don't know why though. I do like the occassional big number.
  20. My driver swing is different than all others. Ball position, swing speed, length of backswing, etc. It's not a big deal, and if you are swinging your driver with the EXACT same swing you use with your irons from the fairway, you have a problem. Taken a divot with your driver off the tee box lately????
  21. Other, definitely. medium length bunker shot - 50 yards or so. long iron that must come in high to a tight pin 300 yard drive (what % of golfers can actually do this - 10%?) Full Flop Shot (lay it wide open) when you are short sided and the green slopes away downhill putts that break a foot or more but are less than 10 feet. Honorable mention to any shot that comes after the one you just hit in the water.....

    flop shot

That is indeed difficult. You need a mat/lie that is very fluffy, to get under the ball with the clubhead speed to allow you to swing the clubhead all the way through the ball (putting it in a position to catch it with a flat clubface) while not hitting the ball very high. From there, the juggling of the ball is not difficult at all, and hitting it out of the air is not to bad either. Bottom line is you can practice part 2 and 3 easily anywhere... it's the first part that is tough in my opinion.
  23. Those club distances are MUCH longer than most 16 handicaps. Well done to you. They are very similar to mine, and I've been a single digit for more than 20 years. I do go much longer with the driver, and carry a 3 and a 4 iron - but all the others we match up with pretty well. No more than 5 yards difference at the very most.
  24. Great blooper reel released by The Golf Channel http://www.golfchannel.com/media/big-break-indian-wells-bloopers-071411/?cid=facebook_V_bb_INDIANWELLSBLOOPERS_072011 David nearly killing a camera man, lots of bloopers from Tom and Stephanie, and even some vomiting.
  25. Its no different than a player picking up his ball anywhere on the course. He can replace with a penalty and finish the hole, or he can card a X on the hole contributing to the point available for the net score of the team members. Your team is guaranteed the net point since one of your opponents did not finish the hole.
