shorter backswing=farther and more pure
Topper replied to moonducks's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
+1 Video lessons confirmed my full swing was too long and laid off at the top. It took repeated trips to the tee box and video shed until I could connect my shorter backswing with a particular "feel" on my end. I felt like my shorter backswing was a 3/4 or even 1/2 swing but video showed that it was really a full swing...especially given my not-too-flexible range of motion. I guess the old saying that "feel is not real" is true....at least in my case. -
Nice. I guess that's about as accurate as saying all liberals are "anything goes" atheists who feel that marriage and family are useless institutions that drag on society. Which is not true of course...most maybe but certainly not all.

Topped every shot at the range yesterday
Topper replied to LI Hacker's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
This is an excellent statement. I took a couple of video lessons last year. It was amazing to me how different my swing looked relative to how I felt my swing was. It took several trips between the tee box and the camera to connect a certain position with a specific feel on my end. And I much prefer to see actual ball flight by taking lessons at a range. The fact that "Feel is not Real" contributes to the difficulty of golf. -
Clone clubs: has anyone bought any of them???
Topper replied to outlaw1984's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Lucius might be a little harsh. Most clone clubs are of the SGI/GI variety so I guess by definition, they are aimed at "hackers"....but then again so are most SGI/GI clubs from OEMs. If you have a high swing speed, then stock shafts won't match up well...just like those from OEMs. If you are a skilled player, the SGI/GI heads won't really appeal to you....just like those from OEMs. The stocks grips and shafts are hit or miss. Mine came with Lamkin Crossline...which was an upgrade because I needed a jumbo grip so I cannot comment on the standard grip. Winn and Golf Pride grips were also available. I have a pretty average swing speed (more than 11 mph) and the stock steel True Temper shaft has been fine. I do plan on going to another set of irons eventually...but it's a lower priority than say paying greens fees, buying range balls, and hopefully taking a few lessons. When I do, I will stick with GI irons. I have my eyes on Mizuno JPX 825s....but not this year. -
Gamer V2 - going, going, gone?
Topper replied to Rouleur's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I'm really getting sick of cold and snow so I made a trip to my local Golf Galaxy to pass some time and renew hope that Spring (and golf season) will eventually arrive. And what do I see on the shelf, boxes of Gamer V2, Gamer V2 (yellow), and Gamer V2 Tours. These are selling at the list price of 19.99 and the tour was 24.99. I don't play tour balls, but I have to believe a 3 piece urethane-covered ball for $25 is going to make some of you pretty happy. I'm kind of excited about Gamer V2s in yellow even though I'll probably have to "splurge" and spend $20 for a dozen. I don't know if V2s are the same as the old ones, but the descriptions are exactly the same. -

I currently use GigaGolf clubs. I really can't complain. They've been decent clubs over the past few years. -
Best golf gps I should use
Topper replied to Rico Cardenas's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I've been happy with my ESN GPS Watch. I don't need a GPS all the time, but when course markers aren't handy and when I'm pitching into the green, a gps is helpful. My only complaint is that the ESN GPS watch is limited to only 2 hazards per hole so periodically I won't have distance to hazards that I wish I had. Other than that, I like having it on my wrist "at the ready". -
In your condo or in a locked cabinet. Even if you could guarantee the integrity of all your neighbors...which you can't....how about their friends and family who visit?

+1 I have a tendency to over swing...by a lot. I had no idea until an instructor showed me on video early last year. I was absolutely amazed. It took repeated rounds of swinging a club and then checking video until I could develop a feel for how far my back swing should be. The funny thing is that I'm not even that flexible so my over swing was causing all kinds of crazy compensations. I still have to keep an eye on this because over swinging has a nasty tendency to creep back into my swing.....just like all the other bad habits. Anyway, I agree with onephenom. Video is important.

I've had problems with every part of my swing so this was a tough one to answer. Learning the swing continues to be a slow and steady process starting with setup and take away just like everyone else. So I answered based on present (as in last fall before arctic conditions set in) problems. It was a tough choice between impact and follow through. It was obvious during video lessons last year that I have a horrible chicken wing problem that causes inconsistent ball contact....usually thin or topped shots. But then after a few of those I'll over compensate and hit a fat one. When I follow through nicely, my ball impact improves. I really have to feel like I'm extending my arms and reaching toward the target. My instructor uses the Orange Whip which is a nice tool to magnify the "feel" associated with decent swing tempo and extension on the follow through. This was what I was focusing on before work and weather shut down my golf season.

Is the Golf Equipment Business one big scam?
Topper replied to Rick Martin's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm glad companies do what they do. With limitations placed on golf equipment design, I KNOW last year's (or previous year's) equipment is just as good for my game. So I'm happy to pickup decent new or used equipment at a great price as herds of golfers absorb the current years' marketing hype and buy "revolutionary" new equipment. -
Expresso WR62 GPS Watch REVIEW
Topper replied to Topper's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Both. I think its best to reduce the band equally from both sides so the clasp stays reasonably centered on the underside of your wrist until you get close to your final fit where a single segment might be removed from one side or the other to get the fit perfect. Completely remove the clasp by popping out the retaining pins. Reduce the band size from both sides. Plan on re-installing the clasp 3 or 4 times to get the fit just right. As I said previously, when the band is close to the correct size, each segment has an increasingly larger impact on fit. It's not difficult and you only have to size it once. Just take your time. Although fitting is an extra step you wouldn't have to do with typical sports watch bands, This type of band is likely to be more durable. I usually only get a year....maybe a little more...before the usual sports watch bands start cracking and need replacing. -
Pinky Scissorhand Dual Grip One Axis Golf
Topper replied to Octi's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I have confirmed that my fingers will simply not bend in the manner necessary for this phenomenal new approach to holding a golf club. All of you Pope Grip converts will have to leave my behind to suffer with my old Vardon grip. I feel so left out. -
Same here.....as long as he is respectful of other players, officials, fans, and event sponsors. That has not always been the case.

Isn't that just assumed? bplewis is right. If you can't troll with some finesse, then don't troll at all. This trolling is so obvious and clumsy, it makes me wish for Patrick.

Let me see if I can summarize: "I [Mikeod5785] am awesome. Ben Hogan sucks. Vardon sucks. Everyone else sucks."

Expresso WR62 GPS Watch REVIEW
Topper replied to Topper's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Actually, I did reference the issue with V1 software and the need to download an update but I neglected to mention anything about Macs and the support (or lack thereof) for Macs. As I said in my review, those with the current version of the software, don't need to sync because the current course database and firmware is already in watch. I also mentioned my less than stellar impression of the igolf download/sync process. I initially couldn't get my device added my iGolf device profile and had to have a customer service person do it for me. And even then, my device profile indicated that I had v1 when iGolf confirmed I had v2 software. I couldn't edit the device profile to fix it and eventually just stopped bothering with it. -
Expresso WR62 GPS Watch REVIEW
Topper replied to Topper's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Sorry I haven't been around as much lately. Busy with family, work, and when I can, golf. Shot tracking works well and seems reasonably accurate and is a "sad" reminder of how far I don't hit the ball. I wish I had a laser to give you a better definition of "accurate," but I don't. It has been more than adequate for my needs. It's very easy to use on the course. Overall, the watch has done what it's supposed to do. The only thing that's somewhat of a disappointment is the hazard information. The watch is limited to 2 hazards per hole. Fairway hazards are given priority over green side hazard....which is good. But if you have multiple fairway hazards, it's hit or miss if the hazard you want is in the watch. But from another perspective, any hazard information is a "bonus" since other watches don't currently provide hazard information. -
Tracking Mental Mistakes - Scorecard
Topper replied to boogielicious's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I do almost exactly the same thing except I'll mark "DA" at the bottom of the card below a hole where I make a really poor course management decision. DA (of course) stands for "Dumb A$$". -
Golf Cart Prototype, what u think?
Topper replied to hanalei's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Classic. You obviously have figured out how to integrate golf with your busy family life. Extra points for being thrifty and resourceful. -
+1 I went to a 7W (and 5W) this year and benched my low-lofted hybrids with absolutely no regrets. I have an average swing speed.

Nike Machspeed v. Hireko v. GigaGolf
Topper replied to aavderry's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
They're all pretty close in price and should play reasonably well. I've been playing GX922s since I started golfing 3 yrs ago and have no issues. I expect that I'll play them next year as well. If you anticipate constantly buying and selling golf equipment, then resale value may be a factor. -
Why do I score better when walking?
Topper replied to Chipless's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
+1 Golf is a different game when you walk. -
I really like the DriTac Oversize because it allows me to have a comfortable, oversize grip at the same weight as a standard 50g grip. For comparison, Lamkin Crossline Oversize grips are about 75 grams. An extra 25 grams in the grip is noticeable. I have not had any grip problems using DriTac in wet (or sweaty) conditions. I use the DriTac Oversize on my irons and the DriTac Wrap Lites on my fairway woods and driver.
