I am trying to better judge my distances for my clubs and was wondering how you guys go about doing so. It's really hard to tell how far they go at the practice range. Hopefully this isn't too stupid of a question.

Figure out what your 150 yd club is (probably a 7 iron right now) and then club up or down based upon 10-15 yd intervals.

If your range does not have the distances marked very well, then find one that does. Probably better to just play though. The best distance readings will be on a course. (100,150,200, and sprinkler head readings)

I learned by being told that my 7 iron should be my 150 club, and then playing accordingly. You will learn very quickly what your range is by doing this.

I found par-3 courses to be great for this, especially evening rounds when there aren't many around. I had a guess for my distances, which I refined this way.

Let's say you're at a hole that you know is 150 yards. You guess that it's a 6-iron, so you hit a good 6-iron and you're short. So next time (or, if you aren't keeping score and no one's behind you, now) you hit a 5-iron. And if it's a good shot (doesn't have to be perfect, but not a top or other form of weird happening) and on the green, then maybe 5-iron is your 150 club. Or, if your 6-iron sails the green, try the 7-iron. There's a par-3 course near me that has the longest hole at 135 or so yards and the shortest at 85. I really honed my distances. Lucky for me my PW is 95-100.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

When you are at a driving range remember that the balls at some ranges are going to go shorter than a regular golf ball. My range quoted me about %85. Ask at the desk to see if they use reduced flight balls.

What I did when I got my new irons was go to my course at a real slow time and camp on the 150 spot for a few minutes on a flat hole. Once I found the club that hit the center of the green on a good shot I knew my 150 club at went up or down from there on 10 yard intervals.

As you begin to play a ton of rounds, you just guess and check, you hit a club that you think you can get there with.

Its hit and miss, when you find out you can consistently hit the green with a 7 iron from 150 yards, then thats your club.

I do a similar thing to that. 8i from the fairway or good lie. Ill take the same club from the rough and expect to play short with a little realese. Ill take my 7from the rough if I have to fly it 150. I can visualize that distance from a level plane very well.

My best advice would be to go out on a course by yourself at a slow time and hit a bunch of your balls. Hit from different distances into a green and you can see what the results are better than on the range. Write down the results so you can remember them later.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

It's gonna take a while, but playing is the only scenario in which you can find your true distances. It will be spotty for a while, but it's the best way.

As was said before, start by finding your 150 club and then work around that.

Thanks guys. Something is really messed up with my swing. :(

My 7i only goes ~140 now compared to last year when it used to ~160. My driver goes about 250-280. I think I am overswinging and someone also said my wrist is not suppose to be loose when swinging. Is my wrist suppose to be loose or stiff or somewhere in between?

    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
    • No. But if I can still play next year, I'll almost certainly be even worse. That's the reality of not being young.🙁
    • I use GPS;  it may not be as accurate, but neither am I.
