Hi guys,

I need a bit of advice here.

I recently bought a second hand set of mizuno mp 52 irons as I lost my PW on a course and my old set of big bertha clubs needed replacing anyway.

I also have a big trusty rusty 60 degree lob wedge.

I bought the mp52s thinking it would take some time to settle into them but I am actually playing better with them then the old clubs and have added them all except the 3 iron to my bag.

The problem I am facing is I am left with the sand and gap wedge from my old big bertha set and they are not working so well, I tend to use the trusty rusty lob wedge from the sand and on a full swing the SW goes about as far as the LW so I don't really use it much, only really for longer bunker shots. I need to find something to replace them but really don't have a lot of cash at the moment.

Heres what I am thinking.

I can replace the sand wedge and do without the gap wedge for now, I might even replace that with the 3 iron.

I saw a few really well priced clubs at my local golf store the other day.

One is the same club I have the big trusty rusty except it is the 55degree, going for R500($50)

The other one is a standard trusty rusty 53, or 55 degree also at R500

Which one do think would be a better club from the sand and also fill that gap between my LW and PW the best.

Another club I saw there that is a possibility is the forged callaway wedge 54 degree and going for R700($70).

Thanks.

What degree of bounce on each? As a general rule, the higher bounce will be more effective for you out of the sand. Trying to fit one wedge in between your PW and 60* LW is going to leave a gap, no doubt, but since you're comfortable playing your LW out of the sand, I'd probably put the 53* in the bag to best split the difference.

I am still trying to figure out what degree of bounce they have, I will try and look it up now.

I know they have something called a tri bounce sole, which as I understand it means depending on how open or closed you have the club face affects the angle of the bounce.

I thought the SW was supposed to have a lower bounce?

The main difference I can see between the big and regular version is the size of face, which is a lot bigger and also there is no 53 degree in the big version.

It looks like from what I can find that it has three different angles high in the centre and lower on the tow and heel.

Something like this.

53 degree 7--15--7

55degree 9--15--9

hope that makes sense.

Thanks david, I went for the 53 regular trusty rusty and I am quite happy with it. It goes about 100 yards and is quite accurate, also works really well in the sand.

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
