Ok -Just started lessons and up until 3 weeks ago neither my wife or I have ever touched a club !Now---The bug has bitten -all the magazines /books/DVD and The Golf Channel .We watched the entire US Open last week and are addicted already .
I got a Rife 2 bar and my wife chose a Odyssey Marksman putter .We are using demo Callaway Irons and we now need to buy our clubs /bags ,etc....
The info out there is almost overwhelming so let me just ask this ~~ leaving the cost out of the equation do I want Pings or Callaways or Taylor Made or Nike???? I focused on these 4 as all my research landed my decision there.I also know that being so new -I really can't pick by speed /control .....What my goal is ,is to buy a great set and learn and grow into it --but that in a year I will still be happy .
Thanks in advance to all /any replies that follow!!!!

Personally, Id forget about buying an expensive set of clubs for now. Id just buy an inexpensive set from a department store, start out with those and then after a few years if you really like golf and its something that you intend to play for the rest of your life, then go out and buy a fancy set of clubs.
It would be terrible if you went out and spent $1,500 on a set of high-end clubs and then in 6 months of so when the newness wears off you find that golf just isnt your thing, there you sit with these expensive clubs that you cant sell for anywhere near what you paid for them.
Thats what I did. I bought a set of Knights from Wal-Mart for $200, played with those for a few years then I went out and bought a set of Titleist clubs (DCI 981 irons and a Bull's Eye putter). I actually found that I could do better with the cheapie Wal-Mart clubs than I could with the DCIs.
I eventually ended up selling the Titleist clubs because at the time I decided to give up the sport. Now Im back and Im using my old cheapie clubs again and I honestly dont miss my Titleist clubs. Actually, now that I think about it, almost all of my clubs are from Wal-Mart. The Knight irons and the Wilson putter are from Wal-Mart and the Ram 3-wood I bought at a flea market for $2.

If price is really not a strong consideration, and fancy new clubs will motivate you to practice more (which is what you need more than fancy clubs...), then go all in. Head to your local golf megastore (Golfsmith, GolfGalaxy, etc...) when it's not to busy (weekday mornings are good), and settle in with a club fitter for a few hours. Tell him/her your current state of experience, your goals, your budget... S/he will recommend a few sets, then start hitting. Try not to be biased towards any one brand (all the brands you listed are good quality), and go with the ones that you hit the best, and the aesthetics that strike your fancy. You may have to spend a few sessions like this; once for the irons, once for your putter, once for your driver, etc...

Honestly, if you're that new to golf, go get fit for an inexpensive set of "game improvement" clubs, and put the cash saved into continuing your lessons. I screwed around on my own for a few years, and finally started taking proper lessons. Wish I had done it right from the start... Learn a proper swing, and you'll be able to more critically appraise different types of clubs in the future.

My advice is just hit every single one you can and figure out which feels the best. I went in with the same attitude, and came out with a much cheaper set than I ever thought, because they just felt right.

yes, definitely like these guys have been saying go with a cheap set, at this point when your new to golf, you wont be able to tell much of a difference to be completely honest.

I was your spot 1 year ago.
i bought cheap irons with forgiveness and inexpensive clubs.

i am now looking for a better set because i have taken an addiction for the game. i am also very young and have alot of summer time on my hands, and i gotten very good really fast.

Get a set with maximum forgiveness, move from there based on your love for the game

Putting the Expensive/Inexpensive question in our hands is tough. We are not you, we don't know what your budget is or who you are. Many people have been brought to the game in different ways, cheap clubs, or expensive. You do with what you feel, If having expensive clubs in the bag makes you happy then go for it. If you want to save money and you'll feel fine with cheap ones, then do it.

We all have different opinions, and sometimes not the greatest answers. If I really had to choose, get some expensive ones now as a welcome to the game present. You can learn to grow into them, when you improve, you won't have to worry about getting new clubs.
