so WHY does she jump like that???

my younger kid has been JUMPING near impact zone and this problem has been there forever, possibly from the day when she tried to hit harder:)

a helpful poster (ritche, probably a reader here as well:) who commented on the video has pointed out again, also providing some tips to fix it.

but i see this often, with both of my kids and other juniors. i think it is as much mental as it is physical in that they try to thrust the lower body foward, in an exaggerated weight shift to gain power. you ask me to shift weight to the left? sure, i will do it and some.

what is your opinion why kids (or people) do that and any success with things to try?

she has a beautiful swing especially her follow through looks great.

I think she is compensating with her jump because she is not turning fully on her backswing. Try putting a piece of tape just above her right pocket on her pants and make sure when she takes her back swing that the tape is showing in the opposite direction of her target line to encourage a full backswing. When she uncoils she will lose the jump in her swing because the uncoiling will provide the energy in her swing and she will simply make a smooth transition through the ball.

If you go to the frame where she is at the top of the back swing you will see where the fault is.

Her first move from the top is a hip thrust towards the ball. This brings her weight forward and gets her too far under the swing plane. In order to make good contact she has to stand up out of her swing or else she would hit the shot fat.

If she started the transition with a weight shift down the line (instead of forward as shown in the video) and hips clear the same as they currently are the jump would go away.

For me when my right knee starts to move toward the target line I take some shorter swings and focus on the right knee moving toward the target.

Draw a line basically at the bottom of her spine in the address frame, perpendicular to the ground and see how toward the ball she moves going through the swing to impact. Then draw the same line for tigers swing below and see how his butt on the line or behind it through his swing.

Perhaps a side by side video with a pro swing would show that there is no toward the ball weight shift and explaining that it is actually a power losing move would help. Regards, -E

I see a lot of the LPGA Pros who have a similar swing. Next time they are on TV see if you notice it.

I used to "jump" at the ball when I was younger as well. I remember I developed a bit of a complex one year as people kept pointing it out to me. So I decided that I would make a huge change and think about have my weight back on my heels. I don't know if it helped, but I figured you can't jump off your heels. Eventually it either went away, or I quit thinking about it. Its worth pointing out that I have never seen my swing on tape so for all I know it might still be there. Long response with no substance....LOL.

She has a very nice swing and its only very slight, I wouldn't sweat it.
