5 days after I break 80 for the first time I go and sprain my ankle...How's that for karma?

So, last Thursday I sprained my left ankle playing flag football.I'm a right handed player. I got it checked out by a doc who confirmed it a sprain and I asked her about the golf and she said it was a "wait and see" kind of deal. No real time table. As far as pain goes, it doesn't really hurt much. I'm walking fine and I swung a club a few times this weekend with no pain. I'm supposed to play this coming thursday and would like to play tuesday or wednesday [1 of the 2, not both] of this week also. The tues/wed round would be walking, thurs would be riding. what's your take?

cheers.

If there is no pain then go for it. just ice it every night to keep swelling down and you should be fine. I am a chronic ankle sprainer, so I know how it is. good luck with your golf this week.

I've had some ankle sprains before...they suck!

Well if you want to play ASAP I suggest you get around the clock treatment or as much treatment as you can. That means Ice, about 30 minute intervals on and off for the first 48 hours. That should prevent swelling, ect. Then Heat for the same intervals after the 2nd day...

If you are going to play...I suggest icing it right after play...it could definitely swell up. I'd also suggest possibly opening your stance with your left foot a bit (point it towards the target by about 30 or 45 degrees to reduce that torsion)...

Tape/brace the ankle up, take some anti-inflammatories, and hit the links. It's a recipe that's seen me through a couple of pretty bad foot/ankle sprains.

An ounce of prevention's a good thing even if there's no pain before you start.

get an ankle brace. I had a major sprain about 10 years ago, up till about 4 years ago, I wore it to do anything athletic.

If you have one on, it will keep you from getting those annoying 'tweaks' that will plague you for months/years after a major ankle sprain. It will let you swing more freely without having to worry as much about tweaking it again -

Sweet! thanks for the advice. I've been icing it since it happened and been keeping off of it as much as possible. I'll go find one of those braces and give it a go. Thanks again.

I suggest getting a mcdavid ankle brace, its made of neoprone. sp? basically the stuff most iron cover are made of.

just heat and ice the ankle appropriately the days prior leading up to the thursday.. do some ankle rotations to ensure you're maintaining flexability..

I recommend using icy hot or something similar the day of to keep the ankle loose.. but you have 4 days and if you're already walking normally, swinging a club, I would say with a little more home therapy you willl be good to go by thursday..

good luck..

My brother just got out of a cast for 4 weeks after tearing numerous ligaments in his ankle and he wears a McDavid ankle brace I believe. He said that it really helps him and he can really play pain free with it.

I had a broken tailbone last year and played non stop on lortab (I love that stuff)

Just cart it, wrap it, and be careful not to hurt it again.

I only read the original post and not the entire thread. So to the OP, earlier in the season I sprained my ankle on a Friday and was able to play a full week afterwards. I did a good job of icing it as much as possible and elevating it. Tried staying off of it for the first couple of days. When I did use it always had it compressed with an Ace bandage. Three days after the sprain, I started rehabbing it with light exercises. I wore the Ace bandage during my few rounds back and iced the ankle after the rounds to bring the swelling down. No anti-inflammatory medicine was taken during the process. Good luck on recovering!!!
