Any must plays Myrtle Beach

Me, the Wife and 2 other couples are going in August. Any must plays?

Lots of them if you ask me. I love that place.

• The Barefoot courses (Dye, Love, Fazio, Norman)
• Grande Dunes
• The Dunes
• Ocean Ridge Plantation - The Big Cats (Tiger Eye, Lion Paw, Panther Run, Leopards Chase)

Are all nice courses.

There's so many courses to play there, I love Myrtle Beach ...
I agree with above, Barefoot is great - play all three. Each is a differenet experieince.

Last spring when we were there we played a new one called Thistle. Very nice course.

Also, you have to play World Tour ... all reproduction holes: Amen Corner, 16 at Augusta, 1 & 18 at St. Andrews, 17 at Sawgrass ... fun, fun course.

Always go in the spring, never been there in August ... have a great time!!

Of course all these courses are Premium courses and not cheap but this is the creme dela creme of Myrtle.By the way Thistle is not new but is a nice Links style course.

We've been taking an annual trek to MB since the early 90's and have played all of the nicer courses. Here's how I would rank them:

Absolute must play, these courses go beyond normal golf and become an experience:

All of the posts above offer good advice. If you are on a tight budget, Oyster Bay is the best bang for your buck. If price is not an issue, then I vote for the TPC. All 3 Barefoot courses are top notch- Dye in particular is a stiff challenge. Caledonia is great as well.

Everyone always raves about Oyster Bay. Maybe I need to give it another shot at some point. I've only played it once and it was a horrible experience. If I remember right, it was expensive for one thing. We get there and find out they had just aerated the greens like two days before (fine but wish they had told us when we made the tee time) and they were nothing but pot holes and sand. The fairways were hard and brown. Just wasn't enjoyable and definitely not what you expect from a course in Myrtle.

My last trip there was 3 years ago. So maybe they are not taking good care of it anymore? However, we played the three big cat courses that you liked on the same trip, and Oyster Bay was in much better condition. I would rate Oyster Bay above the cats. I've played Oyster bay 3 times and have had a good experience each time. I'm usually pretty picky about conditions too. I would be mad if I wasn't told about aeration as well. That actually happened to me at MB National Kings North many years ago. I complained and they gave us a free replay on the south course. I am not a big fan of either of those courses and wouldn't go back to MB National.

Yeah it's weird how inconsistent the courses are down there. I guess it just depends on the time of year you play them. We played Oyster Bay probably five or six years ago, so it could have gotten a lot better since then.

We bought a package deal at the Big Cat's courses last year. It was like $140 for Lions Paw, Leopard's Chase and Tiger's Eye. Not a bad deal and at the time the courses were immaculate. I thought Tidewater was really great when we played it five or six years ago and told a friend about how great it was and he went and played it that same year and though it was overpriced and wasn't as great as everyone makes it sound. To each their own I guess.

Caladonia is a must.
Tigers eye,Glen dornoch,Oyster bay,Barefoot landing,all worth a try.
Heather glen is also very good value.
Heritage is very nice but the greens are hard work.

Ok, so we're heading down there in the beginning of August and its my first time playing in Myrtle. We're staying in North Myrtle beach and not looking to drive all over the place, and its a family vacation where not everyone plays golf (I'm working on that...) so I think I can only manage two rounds while we're down there. I'm also working with a pretty tight budget of around $100 pp combined.

With all of that in mind, which two courses would you reccomend to us?

I have played a lot of golf in Myrtle Beach and the only ones on this list that I have played are the Sea Trail courses, and they were less than stellar. Be careful, because there are some crummy courses out there. I wouldn't say that Sea Trail is crummy...Just not even in the same ballpark as the TPC and the other recommendations in this thread. I have played both World Tour and TPC. I would highly recommend TPC if you are looking for immaculate conditions and a true championship style layout with challenging green complexes. The World Tour is kind of fun, but conditions were only adequate. Its not nearly as good as Tour 18 in Dallas as far as replica holes go. The Amen Corner is weak.

So you're saying you don't want to spend more than $100 for the foursome? That's not going to get you much at Myrtle Beach. I don't know of any that cheap. Maybe the par 3 that's right off 17 North (very close to North Myrtle).

If I misunderstood and you have a budget of $100 per person (total $400) you can basically play the best Myrtle Has to offer. Grande Dunes or The Dunes is a good bet. Tidewater is very scenic and is right there in North Myrtle.
