Hey guys ive been hitting a Nike Titanium 400cc driver for a few years now and its getting old and its time for an upgrade. (Ive been to low on money the last few years to upgrade) I'm looking for something around $250 or maybe a little more. Ive used alot of drivers in that range and my favorite two were the Ping G5 and the Taylor Made R5. I am a 17 handicap and getting better. I hit them both good and im just wondering which one you guys would suggest? or any other good drivers in the price range? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
P.S. Whats the big difference between the R5 and the R7? And I slice sometimes but usually more of a fade, would the Draw model of the R5 be good for me?

bzotta, The R5 and G5 are both very similar in terms of launch angle and spin. Both are high launch mid-high spin. Great clubs. I'd pick the one that fits your eye the best or which you can get the best deal on. If you decide to go with the R5, I'd stick with the neutral model. It has enough of a closed face and heel weighting to help you straighten out your slice, and will be a club you can continue to play without fear of the lefts. It would be very much worth your time to get on a launch monitor to get some numbers and help you pick the correct loft, and shaft to be used. The R7 is a different beast. It's a low launch and spin head which is counter productive for most people.

My suggestion would be neither of them but it's all about feel and these two didn't work for me, sounds like they did for you. The salesperson suggested I hit the Launcher Comp which I really liked and which can be found in your price range. I've since moved to the HiBore, which to me is almost like cheating, but again, it's all personal preference. At this point I think it would be difficult to buy a poorly made driver, it's just a matter of what you find appealing, what you're willing to pay, and what you swing consistently well.

Its kind of funny that this subject just popped up, as I just got a R5 instead of the G5's ancestor, the G2.

I was hitting a Callaway ERC Fusion with ten degrees of loft and a x-stiff ProForce 65 shaft. I could hit that club about 240 yards on a good rip but the shots REALLY ballooned into the sky, so I made up my mind to get a lower lofted club that still had a forgiving CG (because I suck). The G2 and the R5 8.5 degree were the final contenders (G2 basically G5, but without the ugly sole markings IMO, and you still find new ones in shops all the time). I would say it was a tie between them, but the R5 I think is a little better when you consider them both with their stock shafts. The Ping always seems a flex behind the Taylor. Stiff on the Taylor was X-Stiff on the Ping's TFC shaft, plus I lucked out on the R5 with a deal I couldn't turn down.

But my friend's lawyer-father has a G5 with a Grafalloy Blue mid-kick (not the ProLaunch) shaft and if you can find a G5 or G2 with that shaft in your flex, (and can afford it!) get it...the club is a madman with that shaft from my experience on the driving range, easily the best feeling driver I've ever hit.

I recently changed from the R7 Quad to the G5, and increased my loft from 9.5 to 10.5. I have the Pro Launch Blue shaft in stiff flex. I found that the trajectory and carry distance increased by quite a bit and am very pleased with the change.

It took me a while to get used to 460cc over 400cc but the last couple of rounds I've really been hitting it well. I think the G5 is newer technology than the R5 as well so that could be a consideration.

But like others have said, go with what fits your eye and budget best.
