So simply that an idiot like me can understand it?

What am I looking for in bounce for a 56 that I can hit easily from the fairways on my home course that are fairly firm? My current wedge is 15 degrees bounce, and I have trouble with thin shots from the fairway.

Okay very simply the bounce is the angle that the sole of the club makes with the ground. Less bounce the club will dig more, more bounce the club will dig less. I cannot tell you what bounce is right for you and nobody else can without seeing your swing. My only suggestion is don't go out and buy a wedge with very little bounce just because your fairways are firm because you will be swearing fast, I don't care if you play on pavement, unless your a PGA calliber player you cannot play with a 4* bounce 56* wedge.

I always thought that low bounce would help you on firm and tight lies and higher bounce would help for soft and fluffier lies.

I wouldn't think of going that extreme. Just wondering if it's worth me going to a 12 degree bounce from 15. I need to get my son some wedges in his bag, so I'm thinking of buying new ones for me, and giving him my hand me downs.

Yes and No. A higher bounce wedge will help reducing the chances of hitting fat in a really fluffy lie and something with a smaller bounce will dig a bit better on a firm lie but you can never forget is that the more you lower the bonce the more difficult that wedge is going to be hit out of any lie. Like Bob Vokey has said "bounce is your friend".

It's pretty simple, bounce is the angle of the sole. Effective bounce is the angle and width of the sole. You can have a narrow sole with 20° of bounce, and a wide sole with about 10° of bounce play nearly the same. You want the right mix, or the right effective bounce.

To show you bounce, here's a good chart with Cleveland's dot system.

Bounce is a personal choice. I like a very small amount of bounce, which is why I use the 53° sand wedge, it has a lot less bounce than a traditional 54-56° sand wedge. Less bounce makes it easier to chunk the ball, more makes it easier to hit it thin. Good players often prefer less bounce.
