Playing in the NW of the country kind of limits your playing time w/ all of the rain. Now that the rain has slowed down I have been able to get back on the course. Since I have been playing again I have developed a bad slice with my driver. I normally have slice issues anyway, but not to the degree that it has been lately.

I was playing the other day with a local course member and he said that my stance was the issue, that my feet were too wide. He had me put my feet together and take a swing with my driver. I was surprised when I hit the ball straight and far. I played the rest of the round this way and I kept hitting the ball really well.

I have started to widen my stance back to what feels normal to me, and when I start to slice I go back and with my feet together and begin to widen them again.

For my situation the guys tip about the feet is working, but why? What does having your feet too wide do to your swing?

When my feet are too wide, my lower body feels like it gets a too stiff. I also tend to have more lateral movement swaying instead of turning in the backswing. I'll hit the ball more toward the right when I do this, but will hit it straighter if I turn in the backswing instead of sway.

With my driver, I aim to keep my feet about shoulder width apart. As I go through the irons, it gets continues to get narrow.

As a "Moe" swinger, I like my stance a little wider. I have learned that if my stance is too narrow, my hips spin too much. However, If my stance becomes too wide, I tend to push the ball as my body is "in the way" of my swing. There is a balance. I like my stance to be just wider than shoulder width with my driver... then it get more narrow as the clubs get shorter. Also understand that a golf swing and personal feel does change over time. Some weeks I hit the ball better with a wider stance than normal, and some weeks I hit the ball better with a more narrow stance than normal. The biggest key is to let the swing flow and be willing to change and try something a little different when it's needed. There is an ideological flaw in the thought that everything has to be the same in the set up to be a consistent ball striker. I don't believe that at all. The swing is a combination of correct fundamentals and feel. You have to learn how to adjust when things are not quite right, and not think you are "fixing" a swing flaw, because in a few days or weeks you might need to make another little adjustment that helps produce the desired ball flight and control. You are not "fixing" your swing, you are just going with the flow.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

    • I get kidney stones. So 100 oz of water every day. Some nights I drink 32oz between midnight and 6 Am. Which means I dont sleep much.
    • 46 (9 over) Short game and putts were awful!
    • 46+40 for an 86. I just need to play 9 holes on the range before each round. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
