Hi All,

I'm looking at getting a new driver. I currently use a Steelhead III and am looking for something a little bigger but not too big.
I'm looking at the TaylorMade range and there appears to be just too much choice. I can't afford the R7 so am looking at a second hand 500 series.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the following.
R510
R540
R580

Main difference is size 510 is small, 540 is medium and 580 is large. In my experience, most of the better players that I have encountered have tended to favour the 510 due to its 'playability' but I've also come across single handicap players who have played the 580. All in all though the choice is up to you.

There is quite a bit more to it than that, although you are correct in the size differences. The 510 has the deepest face, is the lowest launching and produces the lowest spin of the three. The 540 has a wider, more shallow face and produces a much higher launch and spin rate. The 580 is somewhere between the 510 and 540 in terms of launch and spin rate. It is important to pick a head that fits your playing profile. If you are a low launching, low spin player already, the 510 would be a miserable choice, the same way the 540 would be a poor fit for a player with a high launch and spin characteristics. Get on a launch monitor, get fit, and find the right head for you.

Looking at the link and with your comments, I think the 510would be a better choice for me as I am a fairly fast swinger, get a lot of height on the ball and don't want a HUGE head.

I previously had a Progen FullBore which was simply too big for me to use. I may as well have swung a plank of wood.

The hunt for a cheap one continues.

Stay AWAY from these....They all suck. Look at the R5 for a cheap TM driver.
Go on Dick's webstie if you need a "cheap" T.M. driver. None of these frivers are over 420 cc's don't sell yourself short wit a driver with a volume and MOI from 2002!

OOpppsss!! Too late, I bought a TM 510 last week and tried it against my old Steelhead III driver and it's giving me 20-30yrds extra and it's dead straight.

I appreciate your advices but I think I have made the right choice. Anything above a 380cc is just far too big for my liking.

Not bad for £20 (approx $35)
