<< edit . . . i should have mentioned that my pitching wedge is 50* >>

Just decided to make a big change in my bag and approach to scoring. Took out my 3 wood and 3 iron and put in 4 wedges, 54,56,58,60 RAC TP Y-groove wedges.

No i'm not crazy . . . LOL . . . i know there is only 2* difference but, if one really wants to score it's all about distance control and 5 yards IS a big deal.

My theory i'm going to test out is that 2* difference is going to be much better than the 4* difference i used to use, for example: i'll be able to hit it 70yds, 65yds, 60yds and 55 yds.

I don't know how this will work but i'll tell you that in demoing the the TP wedges, best feeling wedges i've very hit, VERY consistent, so i feel confident that i'll be able to dial in exact yardage and stop the ball. (proV1)

See: Par 5's . . . I hit it consitently 260 off the tee, then 220 with a hybrid, that gives 480ish . . . wedge territory.

Any short par 4 brings the wedges into play
Any big drive brings them into play on regular par 4's.
Short par 3's
So maybe 9 holes per round would benefit from very precise wedge play. Hit half of those right and you're looking at maybe 3 birdies.
Plus greater up and down capacity both from bunkers and around the green chipping, maybe save a few shots.

So i say it could add up to lowering a score maybe 5 shots per round . . . in theory. What do you say?

What people decide on for bag makeup is a pretty personal thing, so if this works for you, great!

For me, 5 wedges (including your Pitching Wedge) would be overkill, I'd spend too much time determining which wedge to hit, and then I wouldn't ever be 100% confident I grabbed the right one. I actually had this problem when I was carrying 4 (P, 52, 56, 60) so I cut back to 3 (P, 53 bent to 54, and a 60). I've gotten to know these 3 wedges, and what they're capable of with full and shorter swings so I'm comfortable with any yardage 120 -> in. Some of that may be playing style as I lean more towards feel, if you're a more "mechanical" player, more wedges would probably be of value. For me, less wedges and adding a 3 wood I can hit off the tee & the deck to my bag as well as a 3 iron hyrid was a better move for me.

Even with yardage markers and GPS I don't think I could tell with 100% certainty that a 58* would be the right club over a 56*. If I was going to carry a 5th wedge it would be a 64*.

Personally if I need to take 5 yards off of a wedge I just try to take a little off on the follow through and maybe play with ball position. Or you may want to practice what Pelz teaches - 3 different swings with 4 different wedges for 12 different shots.

But what works for you works for you. But why not add a gap wedge to that mix :)

I would keep the 54 and 58. I really recommend a 52.

my pitching wedge is 50* so yes, i like your idea and may carry the PW, 54, 58, and 60 . . . the 56 is the one which is the experiment, to see if it really provides an added advantage, it may from the bunker as it has 12* bounce. As to the post about hitting it within 150 . . . yes, the idea is to tighten the distance variation from 150 on in. I believe most would agree that the wedge really is the scoring club, if you want to score you need to get your wedges close, so that's the idea behind this, try to get 5 yds closer.

depends if you put the ball inside 150 yards every hole you will at least for me i hit my pitching wedge 155 my gap wedge 140 sand wedge 130 and lob wedge 100 so for me yes it is an advantage.

even pros don't hit their PW that far...what's your secret?

in fact alot of pros do... not all of them but quiet a few...one advantage i ahve is im young more flexible i can create a faster swing speed. 2 being in football in my highschool i lift weights everyday so i have strength too... so if you dont belive me i would under stand i mean this is coming from a highschool student and who believes teenagers these days but if you are going to believe politicians why not believe i can hit my pitching wedge 155...

What is your PW loft . . .?

They differ a lot, my Titleist 804 is 50* , the standard for sets is 48*, but some play more like 46*. If you put the ball back in your stance this will deloft the club some more, so you might be hitting like a 44* and with an aggressive swing it will go 155. It is true that the pros do hit wedges from 150, i mean some are hitting 7 irons 200+ in the right conditions.

i never said i didn't believe you. but i'm young too (26). and i played football and lacrosse in school and i still lift weights. i hit a 48 degree PW 125-130 (the short irons in my set were bent 1 degree weak). if you play a game-improvement set, your PW is probably between 44-46, like phoenix said. that is effectively a 9 iron. you probably make an aggressive swing and you may even de-loft it at impact one way or another.

I hit a 48 degree pitching wedge also i have the 200 steel taylor made irons. im not sure if i deloft it or not i do get a lot of heighth under the ball though... well alot more than most people i play with... i dont hit straight bullets like some people but i really dont know if i deloft it or not...

what is the shaft flex . . . and do you hit a power draw . . . and is that all carry etc. draw will probably carry further than a fade or a straight shot

is your stance upright with the ball close or more flexed with the ball farther away. an upright stance usually will result in a higher ball flight but less yardage and the other stance may deliver less height but more yardage All these are factors, as well as the delofting possibility. Do you feel like you are trapping the ball a bit with the ball a bit back in your stance, that would deloft it.

carry the 50 and 60 for sure
switch between the 54,56 depending on the bounce of the clubs, and the hardness of bunkers etc. and send me the 58*

NO

What is the loft of your pw? If its 46 then you have a HUGE gap. Buy one less wedge and fill out accordingly. My 9 iron is 42, PW is 46 degrees, I carry 3 wedges... 50, 54, 58.
See? nice 4 degree increments all along. If I'm in-between clubs I take a little off the longer wedge.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
