My 59 Belts Review

Well fellow Sandtrappers! Well I have just received my first custom belt…..to be honest I wasn’t much of a fashion dude and never dreamed of owning a custom belt…..EVER ! hahaha! But at a lower index (2.9), this has me playing more tournaments, which in turn has me dressing a lot better on the course than I used to. But when I first saw these belts, I had to have one.

I was scrolling through the website and on the home page they had my belt – WITH MY INITIALS ALREADY ON IT!!! It was like Trevor and the boys were calling my name! I did some reading on the site to see what the company was all about and found that they actually sponsor some big names, on all types of tours (professional and amateur). The site can be found HERE

On to my review….

A little bit about the company first: (direct from the site)

59 was founded in 2006 with a single goal in mind. To create the highest quality belt and buckle combination in golf, designed specifically to withstand the rigors of daily tournament play.

To accomplish this, we built a buckle that is nearly indestructible with guaranteed parts. Then we paired the buckle with a belt that is very comfortable yet extremely long lasting. Finally we put them together in a way that is clean, classy and unique to 59.

59 buckles are made entirely in the U.S.A. We machine-mill each buckle one at a time from solid stainless steel or aluminum stock, then assemble and finish them by hand.

To 59, any player who completely invests themselves to the game deserve nothing less than a product that exceeds expectation in both quality and styling.

The Buckle:

The quality of (not only the buckle), but the strap is outstanding. Mine is the Players Series Personal Initials Custom. A quote from the site on the materials used on the buckle ->

”Each 59 Player buckle is machine-milled from solid aluminum in a rugged yet stylish black powder coat finish.  We have been able to pass along savings to you by drastically reducing the time and cost to produce these great looking designs. We did this by changing metals from 303 stainless to aluminum (a much softer and quicker material to mill) and by powder coating rather than hand polishing the buckles. The 59 Player retains the unique style and craftsmanship you’ve come to expect from 59 . And, like all of our buckles, each 59 Player buckle is individually milled and assembled by hand in the USA.”

Truthfully, I thought the buckle would show up and be this large, kinda gaudy thing (which I was ok with), but it’s not. It measures 2 x 3” and is very tasteful in size. It is also very light (65gms to be exact), much lighter than my J.Lindeberg belt I was wearing previous. The attention to detail in the background of the initials is wicked. The black powder coating stands out nicely from the stainless background and looks like it will stand the test of time. The buckles are fully interchangeable as well, so you can swap it out from strap to strap for a different look.

The buckle also has a different way of attaching to the strap. There is a wire spring clip that you release from 2 posts. Press it in, take it out, place the belt on the posts and replace the wire spring. Really…very easy and secures the belt to the strap with ease.

The Strap:

The strap is made if 100% quality full grain leather and is SUPER soft. I have other leather belts as well, and they are much harder.  There are 21….yes 21 different colors available, everything under the sun from white, pink, neon green, to lizard and ostrich patterns. You want options, they are there! The straps start at $40, but can be as pricey as $159, so depending on your budget or style, there is something to fit everyone. On each strap there is a “59” logo branded into the right side of the belt and paint filled silver-very classy look! The belt is 1.5” wide and 1/16” of an inch thick. This will accommodate almost all belt loop sizes IMO.

They have a unique way of measuring the belt for size, rather than the standard “I wear a 34 pant” way of sizing things. Below are the instructions on how to measure your “size”:

“59” belts fit differently than any other belts on the market as the belt begins and ends under the buckle with no extra material hanging out the other side of the buckle. This provides a very clean and sharp look that is unique to our style.

For a perfect fit, the belt should virtually meet itself under the buckle. Therefore we ask for a tape measure to be run through the loops of the owner’s pants or shorts as if the tape were a belt (with pants on). Simply provide the measurement where the tape meets itself through the loops of your pants.

When I measured mine, I was a 38 ¼” without snugging it up (I wear a 34 pant as well). Trev said to go with a 38” and it would fit proper…..it does. Use a soft tape if you can, or a piece of string to do the measurement and then measure the string. Don’t try to use an actual hard measuring tape and put it through the loops!! Hahaha! Also, measure it with the pants or shorts you would wear it with, to ensure a proper fit. For me, my Nike Dri-Fit pants fit different than my Quicksilver shorts do, so I wanted a size that would fit best in both.

The Order:

I sent an email through the site with some questions regarding availability and how to start an order. Trevor Derrheim (who by the way is the Founder/Owner) emailed me himself. He also returned my email within hours. Not sure if this is the norm, but every response I got from him, was easily as quick or quicker. Hands down best customer service I have ever received. A simple paypal payment was sent and literally in 2.5 weeks it was on my desk. This is a good turnaround time for a custom belt to be made and shipped via USPS to me in Canada.

Trevor is offering a discount to wrx’ers right now, just contact him through his website for more details.

Final Thoughts:

I did some reading on this site to see what others have had to say about this product. There wasn’t a ton of info, but it seems the general comments were positive. Personally, this is one of the best items I have purchased from a golf company…for the following reasons:

  1. Quality construction
  2. Great customer service
  3. VERY affordable price

Really….this is what matters most. Now I have to mention the logo itself. Yes….it kinda looks like a 69, but ….. here is the answer  addressing that question->

Trev says It's a 5!! Here's a test.. Draw a 6 to see it begins at the top and runs continuously until it loops counter-clockwise towards the stem. A 5 though stops mid-way down the stem and then loops clockwise. That makes it a 5 in our books!

IMO it’s a great logo and it works.

59 Belts are affiliated with some of our friends here as well, like: Slighter Golf, Scratch Golf, Beyond the Links, Miura and most importantly the AJGA. As well they have a HUGE following on tour, with names like Jason Gore, Jamie Lovemark, Stuart Appleby, Ricky Barnes, Paula Creamer, Suzanne Petterson, Yani Tseng,  and of course my Canadian homeboy Mike Weir.

Overall – GREAT belt, great company and you won’t be disappointed. Do yourself a favor and check out the website HERE and get yourself a 59 belt.

He is also working on getting set up here as a site sponsor, so he will be available for questions/PM’s etc..

**Just for the record..no I am not affiliated in any way to 59 belts, nor am I sponsored. And yes, I paid for my belt too, it was not given to me. I just wanted to share my experience about  a great product and company. But hey….i’ll take any type of endorsement they want to give me!!! Hahaha!

Here a few more pics of some examples for you:
