All,

Am in the market for new irons... I am still a high handicapper (20). I am taking lessons, and my handicap is dropping every time I play. My last 10 scores are 4 in the 100-105 range, 5 in the 90-99 range, and an 87.

I have been playing with the Cobra 3100 I/H, but the vibration-dampening inserts are dropping one after the other.

My first thought went to the PING raptures / G5s, so I hit a few balls at a shop, but I think I want more feedback, to motivate me to enhance my swing. Am looking for a sweeter feel overall too.

Anyone would have some experience with both the Mizunos MX-25 and the Titleist 775 CB? Which one would be more forgiving? How about the feel?

Cheers
Alexis

I am normally a 16 to 17 handicap, but playing like a 20 handicap after the winter lay off. While I have not played the Mizuno irons, I do own the 775s. There is a superb review of these irons under the review section of this website. There are also several very good threads in the forum section featuring members' thoughts about these clubs. To sum up my thoughts: definetly game improvement in the long irons but not super game improvement; the short irons bear a striking family resemblance to other Titleist short irons and, with the exception of a little more offset and a little thicker topline and bottom than other Titleist scoring clubs, offer little in the way of game improvement features. I like those aspects of the 775s and I have owned these clubs since March 06. Have they improved my game? I am of the opinion that clubs in and of themselves don't improve one's game; practice, lessons and more practice lowers scores. But, I do have to concentrate a bit more when I swing these clubs than I did with my previous super game improvement irons ( Callaway Hawkeye VFTs ). I like them and will keep them in my bag. But you should really try out both the Mizunos and the Titleists, select the set you feel works best for your swing and, then, get fit by a pro. Good luck to you.

Well, I have experience with Mizuno clubs, but not the Titleists.

NO question, the Mizuno grain flow forging process makes for a very "sweet" feel at impact (on good shots) and excellent feedback. I think feedback may be what you are looking for - ie knowing that was a toe hit that just hooked 15 yards etc . . . The clubs you are talking about have many forgiving features built in.

I think you should hit both - side by side if you can - 6 or 7 irons from each set. Look at ball flight (curving?) , trajectory, distance, and forgiveness. I would bet it will be obvious which one you want.

Of note is that it seems Mizuno's can be a bit shorter than some other companies offerings. I think their shafts come stock a bit shorter and the ball spins like crazy!

Good Luck!

Thanks guys... I'll try and find a shop that has both... If you know other forged+forgiving clubs, please drop a suggestion!

I tried the Macgregor M685 irons today and that was the best not only irons but driver too I've hit in a long time, and are'nt as expensive. The driver was great and I tried the R7 superquad today and it was't close to the Macgregor drive. The R7 may look sweet but theres only a certain sweet spot on the club face, the Macgregor driver's sweet spot was almost the whole club.(no joke) I mishit a drive on the toe and it still went 265 with a dead ball, I'm a broke college student so I'm selling everyting I own to get those irons/drivers and try out next year for our golf team, since my clubs got stolen a while ago and have been hitting only range clubs for too long.

Hi,
I'm in the market for new irons also. My handicap is very low. Definately find a place that will let you swing and hit real golf balls either indoors golf simulator or outdoors. You need a PRO to watch you and 'fit' you to the irons. Also, once the PRO explains the fit and their suggestion, it all might start making sense. A perfect fit makes a big difference in your ability to hit consistantly well.

Currently playing the MX-25 for the past 3 months....used to play Titleist 735CM for about 1 year......Mizuno's in general have a superior feel to them...Titleist to me felt harsher but didn't scuff up as easily as the Mizuno....Based on your handi I would stick to the Titleist 775 since these have more offset and will be easier in the long irons also....

Having used a variety of Mizuno, Titleist, Callaway and Taylormade irons, you can't go wrong with either of your choices....

All,

I like those MX 25's. I played the MX 23's for 2yrs and they're great irons. The 25's I'm told are even more forgiving. You can't go wrong with those, but I'd demo anything you were interested in first.

Plus, I'd also give the Callaway X-20's, Taylor Made R7's and the Ping G5's a demo.
