Hi,

First time poster looking for a bit of help.

I am looking to buy some irons shortly and have been researching like mad. I am a nike man (nike bag, golf balls, slingshot clubs and polo - tragic!), but have vowed to be more open minded on this venture.

I am playing a lot more golf than I used to and consider myself a mid handicapper with solid ball striking - lose most of my shots around the green. I can't stand the graphite shafts I have on my slingshots and prefer a bit of weight.

After all this, it's come down to two - Mizuno Mp-59 and Nike VR Pro Combo irons.

I was all set on the Nikes because I am a fan boy; it would match the rest; and they look great, but I recently went in to my golf store and declared the two finalists. To my surprise, I was told: "definately the mizunos, they make the best irons, from better metal. The Nike's don't get as much spin etc etc'

I am a lefty and tried the Mizunos and loved then - they look great too. Unfortunatelty they didn't have a left handed nike set.

Just wondering if anyone out there can help me with this dilemma. I am torn...Thanks!

The Nike guys are going to say get the Nikes, the Mizuno fans are going to say get the Mizzies.  Both are great irons and really only you know what you like best and what feels good to you.

Whats in my :sunmountain: C-130 cart bag?

It just so happens I have a set of VR pro combo irons for sale and Im a lefty. My ball striking is nt what it should be for these and as always my shortgame has saved me. I just need more forgivness since I dont have time to practice enough. I would probably make you a good deal so I could free up some cash to reinvest in other clubs. If you want you can email me and I will send pictures and details. I am an ebay member so you can see im honest and not some new guy trying to rip you off.

I have tried the Pro combo's, and the the long and mid irons were amazing. The blades were harder to hit and i do not have the ball striking for the blades. I must say though, the long irons were probably the best I have seen from any set. They are super forgiving and the CG is so well placed and gets the ball in the air very nicely.

I have not tried those specific mizzies but the 53 were butter and quite workable. Dont forget the short irons are scoring irons make sure you can consistently hit the blades before getting them.

  • 2 months later...

my usual playing partner got the nikes and i have the mizzy's.  those vr's are pure crap. the mid and long irons are super tiny, really light, terrible feel and awful stock grips..  propably the most unforgiving iron on the market.  the short irons are decent but all short irons are easy to hit.  well i guess theres an ass for every seat.

Having tried them both i can honestly say they are both really good irons, the Nike Combo may just edge it with being a little more forgiving on the long itosn, but i would recomend giving them both a try.

I have the Combo's and i couldnt disagree with you more. Yes they have a smaller head, but they are still surprisingly forgiving. The sweet spot is probably bigger than the MP 59, i have hit the MP 59 many times and they dont have that same "mizuno feel" because of that gold weight in the back. They feel great but i dont think significantly better than the Nike. The long irons with the pocket cavity are also surprisingly forgiving. I am not even that good of a ball striker and i hit these great. Also if the clubs are light then you could just put a little heavier shaft in like a DG S300. And you can order almost any grip you want, I ordered Golf PRide Tour Velvet for no charge. The MP 59 is a great club but it is not that much better.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
