Which is better driving range (using all clubs/focus distances) or just playing round after round of golf?

Hello all,

Just love some thoughts on this...

I am curently having monthly lessons, and was wondering if I had to choose between driving range and an actual round of golf, as time is a big issue, which would be more beneficial?

Driving range, lots of balls to hit, and focus on technique, and focusing on hitting particular distances

V

A round each week of golf

Love your thoughts on this guys.

Cheers

Since you would love a comment, here's one.

It is more beneficial for your swing to go to the driving range and systematically work on your tempo and the like.

However, all that time on the range will be boring unless you play some rounds, unless you can take some friends with you who will give you plenty of trash talk and make fun of your bad shots.

Lately I've only been getting out twice a month.  I've been able to get to the range 3 or 4 times a week though.  I hit 90% of my balls with a 6 iron working on a few drills and focusing on my ball flight.  My long game has never been better.  Short game has regressed a bit though.  Chipping and short putts have actually been really good.  Sand shots and long putts have been poor.

I'm not a good golfer, but in other sports I've played in the past, only playing/practicing once a week your not going to really see a big improvement or get in a groove. I would honestly say whichever one you can do more of. If you can go to the range three times a week vs play once a week do that. If there is a par 3 course nearby try and do that one day instead of the range to work on short game if that's an issue, etc. Just my 2 cents though.

    • Day 35, June 8. Before leaving for work this morning (yes, I'm posting this quite late relative to the practice), I spent 15 minutes practicing at home, into a net.  This time, it was primarily 9-iron (full swings), with some UW (full and half) and a few 6-iron.
    • Day 73: just some mirror work today. Working on feels for being open and getting the front shoulder down.
    • I'm liking this. Finally getting down hands in front of my trail leg pocket consistently at A6 with much better clubhead position (relatively not as tipped out). I can really pressure the shaft through impact with good face control  from this position and stay in balance. Won my first one v one march 5&4 against a 4 hcp who routinely drives it 35-40 yards past me in the men's club match play . Frustrated him with some solid iron play and air tight putting.
