Blisters on Hands

Hey there, first post from a new guy here.

A little background: I started golfing about a year ago, but up until the past month it's been a once every few weeks kind of deal. Since then, I've been trying to get out a few days a week between playing 9 and the range. I had been using a set of the Walter Hagen (Dicks house brand) beginners clubs, and finally decided it was time to upgrade. Picked up a used set of Burner 2.0 irons (4-PW), and damn are they a huge step up.

However, yesterday was my first time playing with them (not including range time) and even just on 9 holes I started to get some bad blisters on my right hand, mainly on my thumb. I know a part of it is probably me gripping a little to tightly, but how much would the grip size play into it at all? They seem smaller than my first set, and I'm not opposed to getting new grips if I know it's an issue. Any tips on determining the proper grip size other than comfort?

On a side note: Between the new irons and not using my driver (still can't stop the slice), I managed to take 12 strokes off my 9-hole score, (67 to a 55, but it should have been more like a 45). Should be able to break 100 and maybe even 90 this summer!

It seems like you are gripping the club to hard but grip size could be the issue depending on how the grips were on your other clubs.  My advice would be to take it to a pro shop or golf storeand try out a few grips to see what is best for you and get some advice. Congrats on getting the Burners thats awesome.

Since you say you are started using a used set, it could be these grips are in need of replacement due to age and wear. I recently learned the advantages of newer proper sized grips for my game. I don't have to hold at tight, therefore my arms are more relaxed. It's worth the investment.

I have to agree with both points above.  I used to get a blister on my "birdie" finger on the right hand, right at the base of the finger.  I also got one on the middle digit of the "ring" finger on the right hand.  Both have stopped after loosening my grip.  It is possible that you need new grips as well, but start by giving them a good cleaning with soap and water and a bit of elbow grease.  That would at least save you some money.

Definitely check the sizing. What my Pro told me is if you grip it with your left gloveless hand and your fingers touch the inside of your hand, your grips are too small. I went from standard grips to oversize grips when I learned this and it feels 150% better.
