medium gaps or small + big

fw's hybrids and long irons are usually available in 3* loft gaps but those little gaps lead to too many clubs.

Think it's better to try to come up with 4 or 5* gaps across or keep mostly 3* gaps with one or 2 6's ?

I bought a set of woods in 15 19 23 27 mainly because the 'medium' gaps save me one full club over that loft range but I'm not convinced I did right.

I'm pretty sure there's no right answer but I'm interested in reasoned opinions.

Loft is only part of the equation.....   how far do you hit each of your current clubs,  and do you play at one or two courses mostly?   What are the yardages like?    How far do you find yourself  "Between clubs"   etc.

I carry an 8.5* driver,   my 3 iron is 22*   and I ordered a 2 iron  (haven't received it yet)   has a 17.5* loft,  but in addition to the extra distance I hope to achieve from it,  I really got it because it's a cavity back,  so I should be able to hit it off the tee for holes where I can't pull the driver out,  and hopefully be a little more accurate,  although I do pretty well with my 3 iron as-is.

Players with decent clubhead speed who still play long irons can save a club doing this. Many irons sets come from the factory something like this, going from 4* to 3* gaps around the 5i:

4i...24*

5i...27*

6i...30*

7i...34*

8i...38*

In set-ups like this, you could bend the 5i to 26* + add 1/4" to the shaft... bend 3i to 22* (loft plus extra bounce) and just dump the 4i. This frees up a club slot.

The strong 5i would be about 12 yds. different than both the 3i and 6i.

Years ago, short-game guy Dave Pelz suggested dumping the 2i and 6i, and bending the remaining irons to bigger loft gaps so you could fit in 4 wedges.
