Got rid or my Taylormade Rac LTII, returned my X-20 Tour and got myself a MP60!!! WOW!!! What have I been missing!!! Playing cast for the last 1 and a half years I didn't know what I was missing. I always thought people were exaggerating when they said cast and forged were different... Now I know... Woooo hooooo!!!!

Edit: What is the best way to clean the club head? Also, do I need to cover the irons with head covers since they can get chipped easily?

CONGRATS ON THE NEW IRONS!! I hope you have many happy rounds with them.

This is from Mizuno's website:

"Forged heads are made of mild carbon steel that is chrome plated. Once you start hitting balls you scratch the surface of the chrome, which can eventually expose the raw steel to moisture, and chemicals that can cause rust to form. The best way to minimize rust is to keep the irons dry at all times, wipe them after every shot and at the end of the round with a dry cloth. When cleaning use only a NYLON brush (no metal) and dry them with a dry towel. If you get some rust forming, spray the surface with WD-40 and clean with a nylon brush or Scotchbrite pad and wipe them clean with a dry cloth. Some high nitrogen fertilizers, sandy soil conditions and water with high iron content can accelerate the production of rust. The use of iron head covers is not recommended as they trap moisture and accelerate the production of rust."

There ya go. Best of luck to you!

In addition to serving no useful purpose head covers for irons are pretty nerdy.

You've never seen my 25 year old Wilson X-31's then...

They are in great shape except they look like someone pounded them all over the hosels and back of the blades with a tiny little ball peen hammer! I wish I had used head covers on them from the day I got them. I'm sure they'd still look like new now if I did. Apart from the dings, the rest of the clubs are in great shape -- no rust, grooves are still in good shape and only a few rock marks and dings on the soles. I sometimes wonder how many rounds of golf those clubs actually played. I certainly got my money's worth from them.

Congratulations on having a set of irons for 25 years.

Along those lines, I bought a set of (1979 ???> ) PowerBilt Citation irons off the internet a year or so ago, but have only used them for one round. These irons look great and although they are 25 or more years old, they probably haven't had nearly as much play as your X-31s. Later this year, I'm going to break the Citations out & play a few rounds with them with the expectation they might become my "first string" irons.

My dad played blades his entire life, (the same set for 32 years actually) and just last summer switched to the RAC O.S. He's added about 10 yards to each club but he doesn't feel he has the control he once did. He really wants to get the MP60 so let me know how theyare.

i picked up the mp60s last summer. on the iron cover question, i keep them without covers unless i'm travelling. mine don't clank together hardly at all except during travelling. any other time be it on the course or in the apartment, i keep the covers off.

when i clean them, i use a towel to dry them off and to get any debris that will come off. i then lightly use a nylon brush to clean the grooves. after that i use a microfiber towel to wipe them down to get anything that didn't come off with the initial toweling or brush. lastly, i take a silicon like clothe you would use on guns or fishing reels to "polish" them off. i've done this after every couple of rounds and the clubs still look like the day i picked them up from the store.

good luck and congrats on the great purchase. don't forget to have fun when on the course.

MP60 is a real keeper. Perfect feel, balance, playability, accuracy, good look at address and all the other good stuff you can say about an iron... I really don't have anything bad to say for now. Also, distance was increased from my previous Rac LTII but I think this is due to change in shaft flex. Was coming from a regular to stiff now. Price is also reasonable. Just add $50 and you can settle for MP60 compared to other cast iron sets.

I am sure you might already know this site but ask your dad to check it out. http://www.cutmuscle.com/ Go try them.

Bring him to a demo day. But if he is doing well with those sets then no need for upgrade.

So far so good with the MP60s. However, the ball flight seems to be a little high even with TT DGS300... I am planning to bend the loft from 3-PW 1 degree stronger. Has anyone tried doing this and had a noticeable difference or am I just wasting my money bending a mere one degree. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Personally, I think you should address this question to a professional clubmaker. Spend a couple of bucks on a fitting and you'll probably end up with a very accurate assesment of your loft's suitability. You just spent a bunch on terrific irons. Skimping now and adjusting things based only on a guess doesn't make much sense to me. You may end up doing yourself, and your clubs, a disservice.

Just my opinion, as one who has had nothing but positive experiences with professional clubmakers

One degree ain't going to change your ball flight much. If you want to make a significant change in your ball flight, you've got to change your impact.

It's hard to compare 32 year old irons on distance. The lofts on them were weaker. Also in 32 years the shafts have come a long way. Besides the shafts fatigue and lose playability.

I'm sure he would love the MP60 it's just important to hit the different shaft options to find the one that fits him. Most proshops have a Mizuno fitting set

I agree to everything you said except for the shaft fatigue part. I read an article by Wishon saying that this is just a myth and shafts, iron or graphite, lasts a lifetime unless it's broken, rusty, dented etc.

Please check the following site regarding this issue. http://golf.about.com/od/faqs/f/shaft_lifespan.htm

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
    • No. But if I can still play next year, I'll almost certainly be even worse. That's the reality of not being young.🙁
