Flyers

I can understand that when hitting out of the rough, you won't get spin on the ball. But sometimes you see the pro's hitting a flyer out of the rough. As a result the ball flies high and long (over the green). I don't get why?

I used to try to hit my wood5 out of semi-rough and sometimes it went high and short. Now I take my Hybrid4 and get better results, but never the flyer that goes too long. So is there something to learn from (other than keep hitting the hybrid )

Most fliers happen with iron shots. In my experience the short to mid range irons are most affected. Blades of grass get trapped between the ball shooting a knuckle ball up into the air with reduced spin. You get more carry than you planned for and virtually no stopping power. With the longer irons and woods, many times the shallower attack diminishes the flier because of all the grass that resists the club before impact resulting in a much shorter approach. The hybrid, because of its design and the way it is swung more like an iron, is a good choice to advance the ball over a 3 wood or long iron. With your irons, if you can get a little steeper and take less grass before the ball, you can reduce some of the risk.
