AP2 vs MP 64

I'm currently playing with AP 2 710 and thinking of upgrading to either AP 2 712 or Mizuno MP 64.  Anyone played with either one of them and what do you think?  Is 712 an improvement over 710?  Thanks!

Can't speak to the 710 vs. 712, but I can tell you that, for me, the MP 64 is the better iron. I think Mizuno's forging is the best you can get from a mass produced iron. I was considering buying a new set last summer, and the AP2 and MP 64 were among 6 irons that I demo'd, and I really liked the MP's. Best thing to do is hit all three together to see which you prefer.

I was playing the AP2 710s for a couple of years then decided to look for some new irons a couple of weeks ago. I hit a lot of what Golfsmith had in this range of irons. The MP 64s were clearly a better club in my opinion. I hit the AP2 712s and thought they were pretty solid. I didn't feel that I would gain anything switching from my older AP2s to the newer model. To me the feel was the same with the 6iron I brought in and the 6iron I hit from their demos. Then I hit the MP 64s. The very first swing was hit pure and I was convinced instantly that the Mizunos were going to be the right choice. None of the other forged clubs had the feel that the Mizunos have with their grain flow forging process. I'm sure with your lower HC that mishits aren't as big of an issue as they are with me; however, the Mizunos were/are a little more forgiving than the AP2s. You can tell that you mishit the shot by the feel, but the results aren't as punishing. Some of this might be because I finally was hitting a club with the correct length and shaft (my AP2s were bought off the rack and never fitted).

I ended up going with the MP 64s with a .5 inch longer S300 shaft and they feel great.

Thank everyone for your replies.  Looks like Mizuno is the winner.  Just wondering before you bought the MP64, did you compare it to MP 59?  If yes, what were your thoughts between the two?

I will be going to the store this weekend to give them a try.....

Sorry, I didn't hit the MP59s, I didn't care for the look with the Titanium insert. The 59s are going to be a little more forgiving than the 64s but I would think with the insert that the feel would be weakened slightly. If your ball striking is really solid, and are looking for an iron that is going to give you a lot of workability, you could check out the MP69s. I am not there yet, so I didn't even try to hit these.

I Own a set of the 710 AP2's and seem to go back to my MP-57's. I did hit the MP-64's(at the range) a week ago but I spent all my golf jack on Wilson Fg V2's. My AP2's have a stiff KBS tour shaft on them and are fitted, My MP-57's are off the shelf with DG s300 shafts. My average between the two sets of irons per 18 holes(I track all my shots) is only 2 shots in favor of the Mizuno's. Over 2 years and 40 rounds, the bigger difference is I traded ping raptures for the Mizuno MP-57's, and paid $145 per club for the AP2's. I will get a set of the MP64's though.

i hit all of the Mizunos, the AP2 712s, the Callaway XForged, the Ping Ansers, and the Adams forged.

My favorite was MP 64 followed by the AP2s. The Ansers were wildly overpriced though the ball really shot off the club face. I was going to get the MP64s, but I was killing time at Edwin Watts. In the used rack was a set of AP2s, that i swear only the pitching wedge had ever been hit. I ended up making a deal i couldn't pass up for them. To me, both are great clubs.

I decided to buy new clubs this year and compared the AP2's to the MP59's and I love the 59's the feel was just way better in my opinion and for me. I have to assume the 64's have to be just as nice.
