do i really need new irons?

Thread Starter

i am a high +20 handicap (average 106 per round), just got back in the game.

added a new driver (Nike) and a SW

but own a knock off cavity back set of irons, they are re shafted (+1) to accommodate my size, (6' 4") per a lesson with a club pro.

i would like a new set since these are 10 YO, but do i NEED them? i am working on improving my game first before i shell out any more cash

opinions?

Knockoffs or not, your current irons were custom-fit to you. If they worked once upon a time, and you can more or less hit them now, work on getting your swing back. Then, get fit for a new set.

You can try out some iron sets while you're coming back.

Since it's late in the season, plan on going to some winter golf expos and early spring demo days before making final decision.

Depending on how deep your pockets are, new clubs are a great way to ramp up your enthusiasm for the game.  Whats more, newer technology found in current irons could improve your overall accuracy, distance and ball striking. All of that should lead to better/lower scores.  Another option is to get a current fitting done and then shop the trade-in programs.  You may find a set that fits your specs.  Callaway has a great inventory of used clubs.  You may find what you're looking for at an affordable price.  Either way, keep playing golf!

Your Irons are 10 years old?    I'm currently carrying an 8 handicap, and although I'd be lying if I didn't look at other irons sometimes,  I haven't felt the need to pull the trigger yet, and I've been hoofing the same set of irons for 15 years  (98' until now)

If you think your irons aren't suitable for your skill level,  then buy some new ones  (used,  that's what I'd do... too many nice sets out there for cheap vs. paying MSRP)  otherwise,  just keep working with what you have.
