after twenty years of dabbling in golf, this year I applied myself.  The work paid off; but I'll be starting over next spring after undergoing long over due left wrist surgery this week.  I'm a righty and just turned 50.  The surgery should not slow me down much, but I'm thinking about starting over with more forgiving custom fitted irons, to limit shock when I miss the sweet spot or hit fat.  I'm also thinking about iron hybrid 3H, 4H, 5-PW to put hybrids in place of my lesser used long irons.  At 6-3 and 38"+ wrist I was fitted for +1 length and +1 or +2 lie angle.  So I have an idea of what I want, except the shaft.  Shaft shopping makes my head spin.  I want to try graphite on all irons and hybrids, but am unsure of the cost-benefit to step up into high dollar graphite.  I really dont even know if I will like graphite shafts on the irons, since Ive always played steel.  With all considerations, I am leaning to decent custom clones, to see if I like.  I searched on the clone threads and not looking to debate the merit of clones.  I consider clones to be an experimental step, to get a feel for graphite on properly fitted irons, and also to see how much distance overlap I want or need between hybrids and fairway woods.  I'm thinking I can migrate to fewer long clubs and more wedges.  I know many of you have reached similar quandaries in club buying decisions so I'm seeking any feedback you guys can spare.

Is there any merit in buying a lesser but fitted set and before spending big a complete matched set?  If so, who do you recommend is the best to build clubs and what is the best value in regular flex graphite?  What else should I consider?  Any other advice is welcomed.  Thanks in advance.  Matt
