I was always curious to know how many people actually get hit by a ball or hit a house or car or any other crazy stories from bad golf shots.

I took my brother to play one time when he just started out...he hit his driver into the houses on the left side...I thought nothing of it so I told him to just take another one and he did the same thing. I told him to just forget it and drop where I drove the ball. We went out to the fairway and saw this guy come out in his backyard with his wifebeater shirt on and a baseball bat! He hit two balls with the bat back our way trying to hit us. I couldn't believe it. The best part is that when my brother went to pick them up they were BOTH his. He actually hit the same house twice.

Was about 9 or 10 years old, playing a Par-3 5-hole course that surrounds a driving range. As I'm walking off tthe green on the last hole, which is just over the right-side fence of the driving range, a ball drills me straight in the chest, and knocks me over.. I cried for a second, got up, and by this time, my grandpa was already by the people on the driving range screming about who had done it, and I picked up my clubs, my grandpas clubs, and my grandmas clubs, and walked up to the range shack. I was fine. But, they made me go to the hospital anyway for an xray. That was a good bonding time with my grandparents.. for some odd reason.

I was playing in a charity scramble once and the group behind us had been hitting into us all day with no regard. Towards the end of the round they hit into us again and hit one of the players from the other team in the knee. This is were it got really interesting, without missing a beat the guy went down and his buddy starts doing chest compressions on him (keep in mind there is nothing wrong with him, he got hit in the knee). The another guy sprints to the cart and grabs his cell phone and pretends to dial frantically, yet another member of their group starts screaming for help. The offenders come flying up the fairway with the player that hit the shot visible shaking and white as a ghost. The guy on the ground sits up looks straight at the guy and says see what could happen when &*$holes hit into people. I was sitting in my cart the entire time laughing uncontrollably, I was later told that they thought I was crying. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen on a golf course.

That is freakin hilarious.. I have less patience than that.. I got hit into a handful of times, and I lost it on a par5 when I was waiting to hit my 2nd shot when the guy drove into me, and hit my cart off the 1st bounce.. well, I had my 2-iron out, and immediately hit a stinger back at the tee.. I know, really immature and dangerous (I was 22 at the time), and it went about 5 feet over his head.. he stopped hitting into us after that..

By the way, I think your story is so good that I shall recommend one of my own. Check out the thread, " What's the funniest shot ( or thing? ) you've ever seen on the golf course?" Read # 50. Not about the golf, but the next paragraph about the tennis event. I think the thread is in this topic, styled " Golf Talk." Cheers.

I hit a ball straight into my buddy (who was by the cart a little in front of me and to the right). It just missed his right eye and he fell like a chopped tree. It was the scariest moment of my life, as I thought I had hit his eye.
Fortunately, I was just pitching it from about 40-50 yards out and he probably overreacted a little, but he was OK. But boy was I scared. Phew....

About two years ago, I was on the short par 4 (really short - in fact, only 225 yards from the white tees) sixth hole at Meadowood, a little nine hole track where I'd first learned how to really play. Proceeded to slice three balls out of bounds into a row of houses with my 5 wood (back then it was a cheap Wilson that came with a $200 set). When I got up there, I'd found out there was a family out back enjoying their pool - and all three of my balls landed in the same yard, all within ten feet of each other. Now that says something for consistency.

Then earlier this summer, #17 at Sugar Bay, short par 5. Been stuck behind two guys who were themselves stuck behind a slow foursome all day. We'd been hitting into the guys in front all day (and they with the next group), usually accidents though. So they tee off and go around a bend. 20 minutes later, I figure, they're gone, so I hit the 3 iron and just absolutely nail it. Beaned one of the guys in the arm, apparently on a fly, at least 240 yards away. They didn't believe it when I said I'd hit a three iron (that was definitely some ego points at the 19th) but they were pretty good about the whole deal.

And about two months ago, #9 at Willows. Been stuck behind an old foursome all day (tail end of one of those senior's leagues) and the green is slightly uphill and obscured by the trees. I'm about 145 out, and I see the guys ahead get into their carts. I think assuming they know etiquette and mark their score cards on the next tee, they'll be gone in a few seconds. So predictably when I push my 9 iron a bit right, straight in the direction their carts were, I didn't holler fore because I'd thought they were gone. I get up there and find one of the guys with his bag unstrapped and shaking it upside down. After a few seconds, out pops the crappy Maxfli I'd been playing with.

It must've gone in the guy's bag on a fly. Now if that could have only been the hole...

Bottom line (I think?) - the weirdest things can happen on the golf course.

When I first started playing in Nebraska, me and 3 of my friends were out on some goat track playing, myself and a friend were in a cart up by the green, the other 2 guys back in the rough 150+ yards and finally found the ball. So my friend yokes it from out of the rough and we hear "FORE!". I duck down but my other friend doesn't move, BANG! right into the post holding up the cart roof right behind his head. This guy can't hit a fairway all day but hit a 1/2" wide cart post.

I push a tee shot into the left trees on a short par 5. I find my ball about 10 yards in. I decide, instead of playing it smart, I want to advance it between two trees which are about 5 feet apart about 15 yards up. From there, it's an easy wedge onto the green. I pull out my hybrid, line it up, hit the hell out of it.

It fires right back at my left nut.

Ended up putting up a nice fat 8 on it.

You were luck to be putting at all. I guess that's why God gave you two of 'em.

  • 2 weeks later...

We (my usual playing partner) were playing with a twosome the clubhouse sent us out with when a golfer on an adjacent fairway hit a slice toward our teebox. We were unaware of the danger we were in until I heard a sickening thud The ball had hit one member of the twosome we were playing with in the temple on the fly. We had a few words with other golfer about yelling "fore," but it was windy and we probably just didn't hear him. The player who was hit had a split about two inches long on his right temple and was bleeding. His friend took him to a doctor to get stitches and we never saw them again. A golf ball traveling at high velocity can be very dangerous.

My car windshield was broken from a golfer who sliced his drive from the 18 hole of Harding Park golf course in San Francisco. I stopped and he ended up paying for my new windshield, so his round cost him about $350.

Another time, I played with someone who hit the trunk of a Jaguar 4 door sedan parked near the 17 Green of Lincoln Golf Course in SF. He didn't leave his name or telephone number on the car.

I did hit someone on the 9th fairway of Harding Park many years ago, I called fore and hit him in the middle of his back as he turned away.

I sometimes reply when someone asked how my round of golf was is that I did not hit anybody today.

I realize they may vary widely from state to state, but does anyone know the what sort of legal precedents are involved here? I guess I always assumed that the liability for golfers and golf courses was similar to, say, that for baseball players and baseball teams, which is, for the most part, zero. My understanding is that, again, generally, if you attend a baseball game, park near a baseball facility, or even drive by a park you know foul balls, homeruns, errant throws, etc. are part of the hazards involved in those activities. Leagues, teams, and individual players are not usually liable for any injuries or damages.

Is it not the same with golf?

The player and I went into the club house to see if the course had any responsiblities for the damage to my windshield and they said no. The player was nice enought to agree to pay for the windshield and I brought it down to a glass shop and call him with the quote which he agreed and came down and paid for the repairs on his credit card.

I have played at courses that have a sign in the club house that says "you are financially responsible for errant golf shots"

That sounds very cool of this particular gentleman, not to mention fortunate for you. I am very curious, though, about whether this guy had any actual (legal) liability for the damage to your windshield. So as not to jack what I think is a great thread (I really have enjoyed all of these stories), I think I will start one on this issue of liability.

And by the way, why isn't the quote function working?

    • Dude. Stop. It does not. If you're just here to troll about LIV stuff, go somewhere else. When you make stupid statements like that, it's trolling.
    • This lead up to LIV Adelaide has the same fell as a normal Major

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
