The impact bag is used to practice the impact position because all the ball knows is impact .

If you look at slo-mo videos it is easy to see that the pros all have the exact same impact position. Weight on left leg, which is a fence post. Bent right knee points at ball. Right heel coming off the ground. Hips open at 45 degrees to target. Shoulders aligned with target. Club in line with left arm and left wrist slightly bowed. Clubhead is square to initial ball flight. Club is slightly de-lofted to insure crisp ball contact and a correct divot.

That's a very good question! One really doesn't see that taught too often. It's more focus on backswing or follow through. There's a show here called Sports Science, on Fox Sports West (I'm sure you probably have a local Fox Sports network?) Anyway, it was on a long drive guy and testing his ball speed while trying to break planes of glass. His swing looked extremely ugly,

except , for his position at impact. It was absolutely perfect, just like you describe. It really is all about your position at impact. Back to the topic, yeah, that's what the impact bag is for. The Head Teaching Pro at my place has had one for years. And years and years. I remember working at the place he did when I was just 15 and he had one then. (I'll refrain from going into how old I am now...)

It is good for helping the "impact" position...but be careful when you use it, though.

You might also find yourself tensing up at impact (tension in swing = not good) in anticipation of making contact with the bag...and also you might start "hitting" at the ball rather than swinging freely through it.

i believe through feel an sound you can tell whether you impacted the bag with a square, open, or closed face. with a square face you should feel a solid impact and a pretty loud sound.

probably because impact is just another position in the swing that the club and body is going through. impact is a result of a process. so the correct process is what's taught that will allow you to go through the impact position correctly. if i put someone in the correct impact position, but his swing won't allow him to get there, what good would it do. even with knowing what the proper imact position is, if you don't know how to get there, you may never figure it out.

Great drill for learning the proper impact position for a good golf swing. Working with my Coach and this bag has taught me many things about the proper impact position in refernce to foot work etc...still working at it and waiting to see the results as at this point I am "Consciously Incompetent" and through practice and hard work want to eventually be "Consciously Competent" ...check out this for how to use the impact bag properly... http://www.golflink.com/tipsvideos/video.asp?v=17034

    • Day 5- Slow,  short swings with short practice club.
    • Lemme guess….’ We don’t want any confrontation so nobody says anything.’ Sheesh…..Call him out and fix the problem.
    • Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.
    • Yeah, this isn't sandbagging. It's outright cheating. He should be banned.
    • That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
