Hi All

New to the site and first question or need for advise. I looking to get my first set of fully fitted irons (always bought straight off the shelf before) and I was wondering: Can I choose a Brand such as say Titleist and get a perfect fitting or do I need to choose a retailer who covers more Bands and be guided by the fitter as to which Brand and model he believes would suit me best. Any advise would be greatly appreciated, Many Thanks

Either way is viable. I think you will find most suggest the second method, as you may find a different manufacturer's clubs fit you better than the one you may be focused on. However, if there is a certain brand you like and are committed to buying, then you can surely go to their fitter and get fit for the right set of their clubs/shafts.

Thanks, I would like to go Titleist Ap1's but then thought maybe I should be a little bit more open minded and I guess just check them against a couple of their competitors.

So go try a few of their competitors.  When I got my current set, my Ping G-400s, I chose those particular irons, but I tried both them and Titleist AP1s.

OEMs can do the fitting, but the fitter sent by Ping will fit you for Ping;  similarly, the Titleist fitter will fit you for Titleist.

Ping and Titleist are also good about telling people when and where their demo days / fitting days are going to be.

Thanks Michael, have to say the G400's were a competitor I had in mind to put up against the Ap1's.

What swayed you towards the Pings?

TBH, if I were going by just the clubs, I considered them equal.  I don't think there's a wrong answer among them.  I even like the way you can mix the sets if you want the "better player's clubs" (AP2, I-400s) for the lower irons, even though I went with G-400s down to U-iron (gap wedge).

The tie breaker was two-fold:  (1) I already had Ping Glide wedges that I really like, and (2) Ping has done some sponsorship on TST.   If I liked the Titleist irons better, I was going to go with those for sure, but I'm fine with either of those aforementioned being tie breakers, and they both broke towards Ping.

Thanks again, appreciate the feedback and as I say can't wait to go try them both out.

When I was fitted, I had my heart set on Pings.   I let the numbers tell me what worked best for me and as it turned out, it wasn't the Ping irons I had hoped it would be.      Have an open mind.

    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
