New Putter Help

I posted on my blog that I am looking for a new putter possibly. Here is what it said:

have been considering getting a new putter for quite some time. Ever since I laid eyes on the Scotty Cameron Red X2 I knew I had to have it. The problem is that I have been using an Odyssey White Hot #2 for what seems like forever. And I love it. So, if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? But, then again, isn't variety the spice of life? Ah, decisions!

I have gone to purchase the Red X2 many times, each time hitting it for awhile and leaving discouraged. I cannot seem to get a rhythm with it. The design between these two putters is obviously very different. The Odyssey is a Scoop-back blade with half-shaft offset. I am used to the weight of it and the feel of the insert. I love the soft feel and I am very accustomed to the way my stroke feels. Since putting is the most mental part of the game, in my opinion, there is a lot to be said for the confidence this putter gives me.

The other part of me, however, loves the technology that went into the design of the Red X2. It's sleek, modern and just makes sense. The Red X2's three red dots behind the shaft get you into the proper position at address. When the dots are hidden by the shaft it means the shaft is at 90 degrees. This allows the putter to perform properly with 4 degrees of loft. I'm a sucker for the innovation behind all that. I keep thinking if I just practiced with it I would get the feel and comfort I have with my current putter.

But is it worth it? I don't think I have 3 putted on a regular basis since high school, and I sure don't want to start. Something with my Odyssey just clicks. But I know I can't use it forever, and the Red X2 is the only putter that has sparked my interest. Maybe I should just try it out. I can always go back to my tried-and-true methods, right?

Give me some advice. What's the most important thing to consider with making a dramatic change in your equipment? Should I stop hesitating and just try it out?

FWIW, I was using my Yes! Olivia with great success for a few months and had a Scotty Cameron in the closet that was too long. Well, I had it cut down and regripped to suit me. I began using it and while I loved it, it wasn't as accurate as the Olivia was. I've gone back to the Olivia and its taken a while to regain the touch and accuracy I had before.

Long story short... if it ain't broke don't fix it. You'll kick yourself if you start 3 putting much.

Just my 2 cents.

Sometimes shaking up the equipment can freshen things up. I recently purchased two putters. A Ping Doc15C and a Mentor Sports Triad II ( this thing is crazy). I sometimes get bored with the look of some putters so I switch it up.

If you have the confidence to change it up then I think it is good for your game.

Look at Arnold Palmer, he has 1000's of clubs in his collection and is known for changing putters day to day, even in tournaments!
I have a X2 and love it so I say go for it! I putt well but like to switch putters often, sometimes for feel, weight or looks. Some people only have 1 putter and never change. Below I've listed my favorite putters but that only starts my collection. It's all about what makes you feel comfortable and confidant. Best of luck

i have a similar dillema i cyurrently have the 2 ball putter an was lookin to change but recently been putting great so i might listen to paco and also get the red x2

that way i can change from time to time wen i feel the putter needs a cghange of for certain courses

If you have a straight back straight threw go ahead and get it but if your stroke is a arc get a heel shafted putter.

      Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.

      Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.

      Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.

      Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.

No Penalty to Any Player If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence: There is no penalty to any player. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment. Reading further down it looks like they have to play the ball as it lies. No replay from the previous spot.
