I just played with a junior that was one of the top players on the highschool golf team last year and he said I should have no problems getting on and that I have a beautiful swing. My dad told me that he will let me have his old clubs if I make the golf team. He has a set of Ben Hogan Apex blades (98-02) but they are graphite and 2* upright. Since the first day of my tryouts were canceled, we went to Golf Galaxy to mess around a bit. I was checking out the used section and saw a set of the same Hogans in steel (Apex 4) and a nice set of MP-33s. I took a 7-iron from each and hit them on the launch monitor. The Mizunos felt really nice and I was hitting them pretty decently, but the Hogans were just fantastic. there was a flag placed at 150 yards out and my shots were all flying within 5 yards of the pin and, all carry, finishing up between 149 and 151 yards (and I'll probably get another 10-15 yards after I get to start playing again for a few weeks because it has been so damn cold up here!). And they cost $150 for the set.

So assuming I make my team, should I go with the used store set or get my dad's clubs adjusted and reshafted for me?

Also if buy a set of clubs from Golf Galaxy, do they do free lie angle checks and adjustments?

Thank You, your opinions will be very valuable to me.

hogan apex are not only great clubs but saying the name hogan seems to manifest great shots

They will beat their swords into golf clubs and their spears into putters. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Old Tom Morris 2:4

I would buy the used set becaue as stated above it will likely cost you more than $150...plus if you buy from them they will likely adjust the clubs to your liking free or at some discount (haven't purchased from Golf Galaxy, just assuming that is what they would do).

Sounds to me like you may have found what works best for you right off the bat. Some of us have to search for years to find the right ones. Congrats.

    • Current state of the program.  I can only do 25-50% swing speed, probably under 50% since I was hitting the ball out to the 150 yard marker (yay!),  to get the arms down and somewhat turn the body through impact. I mean somewhat. Arms down + body turn don't like to mesh at all. Anything faster and the body does stupid uncoordinated stuff. Mostly, I am stuck in the old pattern of staling the turn and flipping at the ball.  So, until I see progress. I am not posting anything here.
    • Thanks for the video! Do you think a ball between the arms type of training aid would get me in a better position? I also have a Tour Striker Swing Trainer (PlaneMate-like contraption) if that could be helpful.
    • There are some little things here and there — the shoulder turn is a bit flat, and the arms move around you a bit too much too. Take a look at this video:
    • I've developed a serious case of the shanks and difficult to control push fades/slices with my irons lately. I used to draw my irons pretty consistently. I currently most draw driver. Also, I don't like how my elbow sometimes pops out from down the line, especially with driver and/or if I'm trying to hit it harder. I can control the elbow a lot better with irons, but quite difficult to have good contact and speed while controling it on driver.
