I scheduled an appointment to have my clubs fitted. (Retro-fitted actually, I got a great deal on standard clubs and it is cheaper to have them fitted after the fact).

This will be my first fitting, what should I expect? Anything that I need to do prior/during the fitting?

I am also slightly worried since I haven't really swung the club that much since it is still winter here. I will be going to the range this weekend, will I be alright?

Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't have any problems unless your swing changes radically. Your guy should look at length, loft and lie at a minumum. Since most people fall into the standard length category that shouldn't be an issue. Hopefully you picked the correct shaft flex for your swing. Lie is usually looked at address and then at impact position with impact being the most important piece. My "good" impact position has not changed in 15 years although I am sure that my swing has altered some. Lofts are done to get consistent gaps and I always would check these with new clubs because it is rare to see all eight sticks from a standard set come out on spec. Aside from this you may look at grip size.

Here's what should happen at your fitting:

1) All your clubs will be weighed and measured prior to the actual fitting. This is done to make sure that they are performing to the specs. For example, a stiff shaft with D3 Weight is actually so.

2) Your clubs lies and lofts should be measured, too.

3) Bring the balls you play with. Don't hit balls that you are interested in playing with. A good fitter will then make a recommendation based on your swing results.

4) If you need new shafts, make sure they don't have labels. You don't want to fall into a trap of buying a shaft based on the maker. You want a shaft that works for you.

5) A proper fitting should last a couple of hours. You should go through your entire bag: irons, driver, woods, hybrid and putter. Get fitted for them, all.

Hope this helps.

    • Current state of the program.  I can only do 25-50% swing speed, probably under 50% since I was hitting the ball out to the 150 yard marker (yay!),  to get the arms down and somewhat turn the body through impact. I mean somewhat. Arms down + body turn don't like to mesh at all. Anything faster and the body does stupid uncoordinated stuff. Mostly, I am stuck in the old pattern of staling the turn and flipping at the ball.  So, until I see progress. I am not posting anything here.
    • Thanks for the video! Do you think a ball between the arms type of training aid would get me in a better position? I also have a Tour Striker Swing Trainer (PlaneMate-like contraption) if that could be helpful.
    • There are some little things here and there — the shoulder turn is a bit flat, and the arms move around you a bit too much too. Take a look at this video:
    • I've developed a serious case of the shanks and difficult to control push fades/slices with my irons lately. I used to draw my irons pretty consistently. I currently most draw driver. Also, I don't like how my elbow sometimes pops out from down the line, especially with driver and/or if I'm trying to hit it harder. I can control the elbow a lot better with irons, but quite difficult to have good contact and speed while controling it on driver.
