I want to share the differences between a new iron set and a 20 year old iron set. I have been playing with my Mizuno MX-20 irons for 20 years. They are a little worn so I decided to buy new Mavrik irons with 2 deg flat and 0.5 inch short. I have flipping problem with my swing and my ball flight trajectory is usually too high so I have to hit 1 or 2 more clubs compared to my golf buddies. Since my ball flight is high I specifically looked for irons with strong loft and I found the Mavrik irons to have strongest loft of all irons.

Below are the comparison. Note that Mavrik basically is 1 to 1.5 club stronger in loft compared to the MX-20s. I know, I shouldn't care what clubs my friends use but psychologically I don't like it 😄. Yes, I am trying to improve my swing to solve the flipping problem.

Mavrik irons' club heads are slightly smaller than the MX-20s. Frankly, I can't tell the difference when hitting these clubs if I don't see the new clubs are shinier. For the same loft, the Mavrik is slightly longer because of their much thinner face that provide more bounce.

Irons: 0.5 inch short and 2* Flat Mavrik 5 to AW (AW-105, PW-120, 9-135, 8-145) The lofts for these clubs are about 3* to 5* stronger  than standard.

Wedges: Mizuno MP-R series 52* and 56*. (80, 60)

Nickent: 4DX 2 hybrid 17* and 4 hybrid 23* (185 and 170 carry)

3 Wood: Tour Edge XGC 13* (195 carry)

Driver: Callaway FT IZ Driver 9* (210 carry, ~230 total)

Well it’s not so much that the lofts are stronger, it’s that the lofts of modern irons have to be adjusted due to the new technology of higher launch, lower spin and faster faces. The adjustments are necessary so that a 7i, for example, still behaves like a 7i as far as green holding for example.

    • Day 112: 6 inches of snow, so just doing some mirror work while watching TV. Same downswing stuff.
    • Day 298 - Mirror swings getting ready for tomorrow’s 36 holes. Mostly focused on the hips.
    • Day 37 - 2024-11-06 Worked with the HackMotion for a bit today. Learned a good bit about some things. HackMotion, GCQuadMax, GSPro… mirrors… video a few times. 😄
    • Day 188 (06 Nov 24) - Played the Weds men’s group scramble today as I won’t be able to play Fri.  Our group started on the back nine - shot a PB 38 on the back (7pars and 2 bogies). 2-over at the turn and reality returns with a dbl-par-dbl start.  Settle down to 3 pars, 3 bogies, a tap in birdie that missed eagle by less than 2 inches.     This was on 7, nice drive with 110 to the flag (this is normally a Pw for me, but the weaker lofts the the DCI irons had me play up to the 9i.  Solid swing and it rolls this close).   I was playing the old DCI 962 irons w/Rifle 6.0 shafts - man those things are still some sweet playing irons.  Finished with +6 on the front for a 42 and overall score of 80.
    • I'm looking forward to it! Funny thing is that I really didn't play much this year either, and no 18-hole rounds. Among other things, I had surgery to repair a hernia, which I know about in June but put off until early September. Mostly played just my Friday night league, although I am playing tomorrow at NKGC. It's winter rates so a flat $39. I'm planning to walk, which I always do for 9, but will likely cut the round short at the 12th hole.
