So, after playing golf for 2 years I finally swallowed my pride and took a lesson. One of the main things I learned is that my irons are an inch too short.

I can get them lengthened, which isn't a problem, but now I'm starting to weigh out all my options.

1. I can keep the clubs and pay $120 to lengthen a set of irons that I bought used and aren't in tip top shape to begin with.

2. the hybrid sets look enticing.

3. Try to find a barely used, mint condition set somewhere from a reputable dealer. (The problem with this is that I still need to get rid of my old irons which has proven to be tough)

Not sure what to do here, looking for a little guidance from the guys who have been here before. -Thanks.

EDIT: One of my main concerns is that I don't want to dump hundreds of dollars either way. Doesn't have to be 2008 clubs.

$120 damn......You can buy the extenders, epoxy, grip solvent, tape, and new grips and do it yourself for way cheaper than that.

How does you instructor know you need longer clubs?
Reason I asked this is length's are not standard throughout the industry....Cleveland and Adams both have longer stock shafts than what Golfsmith states is there standard length.
Have you been fitted?

My instructor told me that my clubs were too short. He measured the distance from my knuckles to the ground then measured my 5 iron and said I needed about an inch more length. I'm 6'2 and a lot of that is my legs, so I stand higher above the ball at address than most people my height.

I was not fitted when I bought these. I actually got them from globalgolf. I was just getting back into the sport after a 3 year hiatus and never really polished my game so never ponied up the money to get fitted and buy a brand new set. Now that I'm getting serious about it I have to look into it. The $120 does seem steep. He said about $15/club after the removal of the grips and the installation of the new ones. You figure there's 8 irons in my bag...yeah, bummer.

I went through the same thing....I am 6'2 also and my wrist measurement was 37.5....I needed 1/2 longer

I didn't really notice a big diff when I reshafted 1/2 longer.....the bad thing was it was in my head....golf is so darn mental...so it messed with me

I spent $100 on shafts and grips, and did it myself.

Yeah I see what you're saying but there's a pretty big difference between adding 1/2" and 1".

I have no idea what I should do.

True I would have noticed 1"....Have you confirmed what your instructor said?

What is your wrist to floor measurement?

I just tried some fitting wizards and it says you need 1/2 shorter than standard

You need to double check on this.....33" should be a shorter shaft.....mine is 37.5 which makes sense that I needed a longer shaft(more distance to cover)

he said "knuckles" to floor.

wrist to floor will be higher than 33" depending how big his hands are.

Do yourself a favor and get a DYNAMIC fitting. You got what's called a static fitting.

In a static fitting, they measure you standing there and tell you what you need. In a dynamic fitting, they have you hit golf balls and they measure characteristics of your swing that way. Since golf involves actually swinging clubs and not just standing around with them, the latter is always preferred. Sometimes you get the same results, but oftentimes you won't.

Sorry my bad....didn't notice he said "knuckles"
Question though...why did he measure knuckles? There isn't a fitting chart whether static or dynamic that uses that measurement. Hell depending on how tight or loose your fist was would affect the measurement, if a closed hand was used....

Even with a 33" knuckle meas. plus 2.5 for hands...it still doesn't jive...35.5 would be a standard length not what you were told regarding 1"

But hey just trying to help....

Expensive? Best $50 you'll ever spend on your golf game.

It takes about 20-30 minutes... $175 is outrageous. Find someone else. :)

That is disgusting. I've never paid more than $50. Most people I buy from do it for free too if you purchase your irons from them also.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
