Wanted to have a 3 wood for Tee and fairway shots. Got a good deal on a 3wood XHot from a "friend". Figured bigger head and longer shaft (than the 3w X) would be great. Well............I can't hit it

Is this a harder club to hit than the smaller X Fairway wood?
Should I try something else?

I cannot say enough good things about the X Hot. True, it is an inch longer than standard at 44", but the head is oversized, and the face is very shallow. It sets up great in the fairway and I have absolutely no problem hitting it off the deck. Oh, and did I mention that it's long? In the launch monitor, I averaged (yes, averaged) 240 yards.

Its longer than a lot of drivers. I wanted to say that there is no difference between the x and the x hot--the xhot just has the banzai shaft---great marketing ploy by callaway

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

Actually, they're completely different. The regular x is approximately 170cc and has a fairly deep face. The x hot is 202cc and has a very shallow face. Also, the lie angle on the x hot is 55 degrees. The lie angle on the regular x is in the 56-57 degree range. Lastly, the shaft length on the x hot is 44 inches. The shaft length on the regular x is 43 inches. Oh, and you are correct, the shafts are completely different.

One last thing, the x hot only comes in a 15 degree 3 wood. The regular x comes in a bunch of different lofts/heads. Hope this helps. e

Sounds just like me... I got an X-Hot 3W last year and didn't like it at all. I need a club I can hit with confidence on a tight par 4 and use from the fairway on par 5's. For me, the X-Hot is NOT that club. The head is too big to use from anything but the most perfect lie in the fairway and the shaft is too long to give me the control I want off the tee. I turned mine in to the Callaway pre-owned site and got an FT 4 wood (17 deg). Best decision I've ever made!

The FT head is much easier to hit off the fairway and it's very long. It's one of those clubs that defies explanation. For my swing right now, it's the perfect head, shaft, look, and feel. No idea why, but I hit it flush more often than I have any right to. My driver SS is about 100 mph and I routinely carry the 4W 230 of the tee. I like it so much I was tempted to trade in my X hybrids and get the FT hybrids instead (even though I like the X hybrids a lot). In the end, those FT's were just too expensive though. Obviously your results will vary but I'd get a pre-owned (from Callaway this means basically new) FT fairway wood. I'm guessing the only reason these clubs didn't do better is that they are seriously expensive. If that doesn't sell you, maybe this will: you can easily see the carbon fiber weave on the top of the club face. There's just something I find satisfying about looking at my friends and saying (in my best Jeremy Clarkson voice) "My 4W is made from... carbon fiber" - of course I might be considered a bit odd by some

I have the callway x-the original and i want to tell you that the club is great. I use it more off the tee than anything. I want to say that this is a diggers club. If you play in Texas or somewhere where the ground is harder-i dont reccomend this club. I need to make a good size divot for max distance with this club. It is perfect for a wetter area because the bottom line of the club is chubby. This club is soo hot off the face though..

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
