I currently play 56 and 60 degree 588 Cleveland raw tour grind wedges and would like to replace these with some newer model that look and feel similar. I've hit the titleist spin milled wedges and didn't really care for them much.

Any suggestions? I'd either like to stick with some updated clevelands or go w/ the callaway or taylor made wedges. I really like a soft feel and something that i can spin a lot.

thanks.

I would take a look at the new Cleveland CG-12 Black Pearl.

Scratch Golf is very very nice. I have 52 56 and 58 and I am saving them for special rounds :)

I read the review on Sand Trap and had to get it and I am very very happy. So if you want to try something different get the Scratch golf or else the Spin Milled will do just fine.

the new clevelands are available in the 588 DSG sole grind.. CG12 for better players and CG14 for a little help... I hear really great things about the Callaway X Tour Vintage... Taylormade has come out with new Z grooves and a nice smoke finish..

Vokeys are the my personal favorite. But go with what you like

Clevelands are always a solid choice for wedges, i favor the Gunmetal finishes. Love the feel plus less glare.

You may also wana try the Vokey 200 series wedges.

from my experience, the 200 series is the spin milled without spin milling.

My 2 cents:

The titleist Vokey wedges seem to get the best reviews. I've got a couple Nike SV Tour wedges and love them. The mizuno MP series wedges are nice as well. The titleist and mizunos feel better to me when you hit them well, but I hit the nikes much more consistently for some reason.

I've never hit the clevelands, so can't comment on them.

I switched to the cg11's this year for my 50 and 56 after trying the cg10's, 588 rtg's and 588 dsg's. They are all very nice as are all of Clevelands wedges but the cg11's stood out for some reason. Plus, they spin like a madman. You can pick them up on ebay right now used for around $40 with good grooves.

12's will spin a bit more, but both are good. Niether spin quite as much as the Vokey... but that is one of the things I like. The 10's are also a different metal... I think the 12's have a little better feel for some reason. The 588's had a great feel too... you might be able to find them still if you shop around.

The CG12 has the new "zip groove" technology, but Golf Digest warns about over spinning on high loft wedge shots. I really don't need the extra spin in my game, but I did enjoy saving $$$.

I picked up my CG10 52° at a local golf shop for $69.99 and my CG10 56° at a golf show for $49.00! Both brand new. Steals huh? Looking back I should have cleaned out the back at $49 and resold them on eBay.

I personally love the RAC wedges, got 52 and 56 in RAC wedges while my 60 is a Callaway V, the headshape on the RAC wedge gives me more confidence and the amount of bite they get on the green is great.

If this is what your looking for I don't recommend Cleveland's CG12 line. They aren't super flush and the spin is overrated. I had 2 of these wedges in my last set, and they where good wedges. But they didn't meet the standards of what I was looking for.

I would recommend taking a look at the Mizuno MP-T Wedges, or the new Callaway X's, I've hit them both and they felt really nice. I wasn't able to get a good read of the spin however, since I didn't take them to the course.

    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
