Im looking at buying some new irons, i play off 18 at the moment but only usually get out once a month or so due to playing football taking up all my time, but my footballing career is almost over so now i want to focus on golf, i want to get my handycap down to single figures... which irons would you suggest, i currently have a set of 12yo top flite tour irons i hit them pretty well but its time to upgrade... so far i have tried Ping G10's callaway x20 (not a big fan of those) and nike sumo...

Considering you want to improve your game and get to a single digit cap, I would check out a set of TaylorMade R7's. They are not extreme game improvement irons, and they are not unforgiving musclebacks, they are right in between, so these might work well for you. Hope this helps!

I just bought Cleveland CG golds off of ebay (brand new, in original wrapping) for 425shipped! its a steal, a local shop wanted 750 lol
About the clubs, i love them. i got the graphite shafts, so they are lighter, very well weighted. The gelback helps you never feel a bad shot, it is like cutting thru butter. the face is big enuff to help(forgiving), but not too big. If you are a pro, try the CG reds. my friend(handicap +8) tried those and loved them.

Give Cleveland CG gold/red a try!!

In my Xtreme II carry bag:

Mizuno Driver
MacGregor 3Wood
Taylormade Rescue Hybrid 3i CG Gold Graphite Irons (4-PW) 52* CG14 wedge Vokey 56* Sand Wedge Vokey 60* Lob Wedge 33" Newport

I would recommend the Cleveland TA4's or Ping Eye 2's

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

I just got fit for Ping G10's and could not be happier. I went to a highly rated Ping club fitter and in the process he corrected a few swing flaws and I gained 48mph on the swing analyzier and was striking the ball alot better. He also re-grip and extend my SW and 60* wedges so the will mach the rest of my clubs. I do plan to replace those wedges later this year.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
