New golfer:  I've played a few rounds of golf in my entire life, last time was over a decade ago.

I got a set of John Daly Hippo clubs at a yard sale, $20 for the set.  It has a 370cc driver.

How old are these clubs?  Where they good when they came out?

More importantly, are they going to hurt my development as a player?  Or help?

When I picked up the golf bag by the handle, the handle ripped off because the threads were so old.

I have a lot of kids so I don't spend too much on myself, but could probably buy a better set if it would make a difference.

As far as my skill level is concerned, I just watched a video a few times on how to grip the club.

I suck but have played other sports, I could hit a baseball real good when I was a kid.

I signed up at a local golf course with a deal that lets me play for free after 5.

I practiced out on the driving range and putting green, then played 6 holes.  I got 3 bogies and 3 triple-bogies, lol.

I also have some Wilsons from about the year 2000 because a guy fell of a ladder and didn't want them anymore.

I also have a titleist sand wedge from 1994 (was able to google it).

Thoughts on these John Daly Hippo clubs and how they compare to other clubs, including old Wilson clubs and new starter sets.

Much appreciated!!!

Apparently these were once pretty decent clubs.  What I would suggest is you use the current set of clubs you have and first get around to learning/practicing so that you can play reasonably well.  At that point consider whether you would like to have another set or not.  For example I have a set of 1986 Dunlop irons at my parents home.  They are a set I leave there so that I don't need to carry my far more modern set when I visit.  Admittedly the Dunlop sets probably plays one club shorter than the newer set, but I can play them perfectly well.  Once your game improves and you have a reasonably consistent swing go and get fitted.  At that point you need to decide whether you are willing to spend the money for newer clubs

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
