I can't believe how expensive 2nd hand vokey wedges are on ebay. I have been looking at alternate brands, one name I've heard good news about is the bridgestone WC wedges. Can anyone recommend these? I've also been looking at the cleveland zip wedges too.

Another topic i'd like to hear feedback on is the different bounce choices... how do i know what bounce angle i want/need?

I would like to recommend the old Phil Rodgers wedges by Cobra ...They are great clubs and can be found for very cheap on this site..... www.globalgolf.com

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

thanks, and another question? Do wedges actually loose their feel/spin with use? Is there a reason to buy new ones?

I think they do...I know Vijay Singh replaces his wedges EVERY WEEK--but honestly every 2 or 3 years i think would be reasonable to replace the wedges

Forged wedges are going to lose their spin capabilities to an extent because the metal is softer. The ones that you buy along with your cast set of irons probably won't but then again they won't have the spin capabilities that the forged do.

I know im a very high-handicapper but id like to put my vote in for the Cleveland CG14's w/zip grooves. I've actually had some REALLY great shots with it and it check's up really nicely. Feedback is pretty good off the club face and its a very confidence inspiring club for me.

I am playing the Cleveland CG11's right now and they feel great with alot of spin. They even have a little cavity in the back. I usually just play the std. bounce because I don't play alot of "hard ground" winter golf and it never gets too soft around here for long periods of time. You can't go wrong with any of the Cleveland's though. Very reasonably priced on ebay usually as well.

Ive had to replace my Vokey sand wedge twice in the last year because of worn face/grooves. The center of bottom 3 grooves on mine were almost bent inwards. But I practice almost every single day so I think that accelerates the wear. I play 48 and 52 degree Vokeys and they are still in pretty good shape after 1 1/2 years of use.

I have Nike SV Tour Black Satin wedges in 52 and 56, both with 10 degree bounce. I also have a Cleveland CG10 in 60 degree. The Cleveland is softer than the Nikes, but the Nikes have a little more bite. I really like both types, but I prefer the crispness of the Nikes. I just got a mailer from Edwin Watts advertising the CG10s for $70...

Theyre nice clubs-did you see woody austin playing well with them today?

yup. they feel and look awesome. I can stop them on a dime too. Some say they may even spin too much, but i usually shoot past the pin and spin it back.

yeah the 10's are cheap now because everyone wants the zip12's. I just spent some good time at austads comparing the vokeys to the cg 12's 14's etc... the spin milled certainly looks like it would bite more than the cg's just from the look of it, that has also been confirmed in another thread. Another thing i'm learning about is the bounce. Assuming you never played in sand, would you always want a low bounce club? Would a lower bounce club be more likely to dig it and divot more easily?

Well the point of bounce on wedges is so you dont have to dig the club at all. Its to "bounce" lol. But yes, if you never had to play from a bunker you would want less bounce because the bounce soles will cost you some distance on full swings. Though, i find its eaisar to "trap" the ball with a wedge style clubs because of the bounce, so I went to a 48 degree vokey as well. Great club. Much more more versitile than a pitching wedge you would get in a set.

Dudes, I am really tired of the word vokey. If I only read this site for information, I would think that's the only kind of wedge there is. Wilson Staff has a new series of forged wedges that are a lot like the classic Dyna-Power irons. They are beautiful. Regarding bounce and so on, read the page at: http://www.purelygolf.com/E/Wedges.htm

    • Day 36: 15 balls, same as last few days. Then a little indoor putting.
    • hey guys, sorry about the kind of short notice, but i'm not going to be able to make it to the outing this year....
    • Had to correct the distance - should have read 5,400 not 5,500  yds.
    • Had to report this one - played Minnesott again today with my son.  We played behind the Friday Men's group and had a decently paced round.  My round started off par-par-bogie.  I was feeling good to be +1 through three.  Played the next two par - par and then disaster hits - well I thought it may be the unravelling of +1 through five.  Tee shot on six is a hard pull hook into the ditch separating four and six.  I know the ball is lost and re-tee - hitting three off the tee on this par five.  Long story short - what should have been at worst a bogie became a triple 8.  Now I'm +4 through six holes.  Get a solid par on seven (which I celebrated as a solid recovery hole).  Eight is a birdie and I'm back to three over.  Nine, a par 3 over water, finishes par for a 39 front.   We roll to the back to where I birdie ten (the toughest hole on the back) to be -1 after the first hole on the back, +2 for the round.  Par eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen and fifteen - that was an in the zone moment.  Have to note that fourteen - the second par 3 on the back - I hit the tee shot just short right of the flag.  Easy pitch with the 56 should put me close for a tap in par.  It does not happen - as I duff the pitch to about 3yds closer.  I reset and this time I nip it nicely only to see it land and slowly roll to the cup and drop in for a chip-in par save ( a first).   We get to sixteen and I am thinking this could be a really good round.  It's also a par 5 and I hit a solid tee shot.  I'm about 220 from the center of the green and figure I can layup with the 3w as there is a nice landing area in front of the green and it would play nicely into the typical distance I hit this club.  I'm sitting about 50 yds from the flag to the right hand side.  I overcook the 56 and see the ball bounce off the back of the turtle green.  I hit an easy 56 again to see the ball roll to the other side of the green.  Long story it became a 3putt double.  Now I am +4 through sixteen.  The last two holes are solid pars - one an up and down, the other a GIR two putt. Finished the back 1 over at 37.  Total score is a 76!  A new personal best.  Best "all around" play through the bag to date.
    • Day 562, May 17, 2024 Spent a LOT of time on GEARS stuff today, so while waiting for imports, exports, and all manner of things, I did some rehearsals in the mirror and camera in my basement.
