I was playing around with the Speed Stick today at Golfsmith. I was hitting a 100 according to it. I used the right color for my weight too. I doubt I reach a 100 mph for my swing speed. Is this thing accurate?

Short answer no. My dauhter is 13 and can swing it 100. She no way swings the driver that fast.

Swing stick is basically a weighted club. Since it is longer and weighted differently speed readings aren't accurate, (almost everyone swings harder than they can with a golf club). As a stretching tool and a way to emphasize tempo and timing it has some merit. I don't think it has $100.00 worth of merit. The guy who came up with it, just a local teaching pro from this area, with an idea, seems like a decent guy. Hits the ball a ton for a small late middle aged guy, but uses the long putter, groan.

Unfortunately, CARMELO Anthony isn't much of a golfer, but CAMILO Villegas is a very good golfer, though he endorses a worthless product.

I keed. How's the weather where you are? We've had 50's the last couple of days but it's been a little too wet to go out. Hopefull tomorrow or Thursday because it's supposed to be a wet weekend.

isn't the speed stick speed gauge just meant to show yo how fast you are swinging the speed stick? I thought it was just supposed to show you if you're improving or not relative to your first swings.

As for the camillo Product, that seems like even more garbage than the speed stick to me. It clips on to the handle of the club, but how the hell does it know wher eyou have clipped it on, or what length of driver you are using (which would make a difference in how it reads your club head speed)... seems dumb.

Odd. I've seen Vjay warm up at the range many times and never saw him with the "speed stick".

I don't think this is the same device I've seen at my range... one that makes a whistle sound as the speed increases. That might be useful in determining when your acceleration peaks. But one that just gives you a speed reading seems kind of pointless.

I have used it the past several years and am sure it is very accurate, but it's not really helpful for your golf game. It will identify for you where you can get more speed on your swing, but that swing won't necessarily work on the course. Good for limbering up and fooling around with but like other golf aids it's not a magic bullet by any means. BTW after a lot of use it still works great so it's durable, just don't get water (rain) in the glass tube, if you do put it in the sun for several days.

I found it helpful because:

1. Its something to swing the winter when there's 3 feet of snow on the ground;
2. Further to point 1, it helps keep you limber in the winter;
3. I have found it helpful for getting the feeling of a wider arc and higher finish while maintaining balance; and
4. It provides a relative measurement of speed that you can use to gauge the progress of a workout regiment.

I have one and would say that it has in fact added some speed to my swing....I do not pay attention to the speed though cause to me that doesnt matter because if you can keep the ball in play thats all you need to do... ANd yes this is over priced

    • Day 5 - 30 minutes of green-side work. Lofted club chipping, bump and run with 9 iron.
    • I don't know if it's the torque balance or whatever else. But I got fitted for an Edel 4.0 a few years back and gained a bit under two strokes on the green! So, at minimum, get fit 😁
    • Yes, thats still your NPCR.  Your stance might be OB, which is legal, it might be down the cliff, or in water in a Penalty Area, those factors don't disqualify that from being the NPCR. However, once you make that drop, you have a new situation, one for which a left-hand stroke might be reasonable.  As you describe it, if you went further left of the path the ball might be OB if you got your feet off the path in taking a left-handed swing.  If all that is true, your NPCR for a left-hand swing could be on the right side of the path.  Its important to consider a probable sequence of relief situations before you decide to lift the ball to take relief the first time.
    • This is one of the handiest rules of thumb to remember. If relief is free, it's one club length. If it's with penalty, it's two club lengths (or on the line away from the flag when that's allowed). On the OB question, suppose your ball is on the cart path and your reasonable swing setup is right handed and you "have" to take relief (says it's a mini cobblestone path and the ball is sitting down and you're guaranteed to blade it and not really know where it's going, and probably damage your club). Your NPR is left of the path, as it almost always is for a righty. But while the ball can be in bounds, your feet will be across the OB line between the hole and the houses lining the fairway. Is that still an NPR? Are you allowed to take a right handed swing with your feet OB? What if the OB is a cliff or other landscape feature that means you can't stand there? Does a point on the left hand side of the path still count as NPR?
    • The OP says "under a prickly ugly bush" Not being there and in the absence of a clear photo of the situation, I am not entirely convinced about the reasonableness of the claim. However, DavePo43 is of course correct in all other aspects.
