Hey guys, I looking at upgrading into new irons. I've been playing hand-me-down Powerbuilt Grand Slam II Blades (like 20 years old) for 3 years and I've decided on getting some new clubs. I am about a 13 handicap, but I think im going to reduce my handicap below 10 this year. I have mishits like anyone else of course.
I'm looking at the Titleist 735cms or Macgregor M685s

1. I was wondering if anyone has any first-hand experience with either of these clubs, and if so I was wondering what your opinions on them were.

2. Im also wondering about the forgiveness factor. Are the cavity back long and mid 735s forgiving, and how about the M685s.

Thanks

Well I just bought the 735.cms. All I can say is they are absolutely amazing. The shots come off so pure and even miss hits fly closer to true that you would expect. I highly recommend them.
BUT HAVE THEM FITTED. When i got them, I was all over the place. I Had them lenghtened and 2 degrees up and now they are dead straight.

OH. and what sold me on the 735s was they feel like butter when I swing. I take practice swings until I feel the buttery soft motion of the clubs before each shot. Then I hit the shot. Butter.

I have the 735cms and absolutely love them. They are for a better player that makes consistent contact with the ball but can still be played by a golfer that needs moderate forgiveness. The thing that I like about them is that I can really control the ball flight and keep it down when I need to. The trajectory control is amazing. I like the set-up, thinner lines and lack of off-set. When you hit them right they sing. When you hit them wrong, you will hit a bad shot but usually not a round breaker. The progression of blades to cavity helps with the forgiveness, but you need to be comfortable hitting a long iron with no off-set.

The 735 CM--i love the progressive blade design..It is a mixed set that is tour trusted..I really love the asthetics of the club design..they look old school and also have two different finish designs that you can choose--chrome or stainless

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

So how forgiving are the 735s? B/c im a semi-consistent long iron player but a lot better from 6-iron and in (so id be looking for a decent amount of forgiveness from the long irons)

And has anyone played/tried the M685s? They seem like an interesting club, being forged with the progessive metals but having a cavity back. Has anyone tried them, and if so hows the forgiveness and feel, as well as the quality?

Thanks alot

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
