Just curious to know if anyone else here has ever been interested in designing a golf course before. I know it will never be my profession, but I do enjoy drawing holes and thinking of challenging/fun holes to play on. I plan on buying a book or two on it just to see how difficult it is for the greats like Fazio and Dye to do what they do. If anyone has any recommendations of books that would be great to.

I read more about golf design and architecture than any other golf topic.

By far, IMO, the best book on design and architecture is Tom Doak's Anatomy of a Golf Course

http://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-Golf-C.../dp/1580800718

Pete Dye once said something like 90% of golf course architecture is making drainage look aesthetically pleasing.

Doak's book covers the different schools of design (Penal vs. Strategic vs. Heroic), routing, psychology, as well as construction of greens, tees, fairways, etc. The book gives plenty of history as well.

I guarantee if you read it, you'll think of many things in a whole new light.

Haha thanks, the perfect information I was looking for. I really have no idea what I would be getting myself into, so this would be perfect. Looks like a good read, thanks!

    • Three women were playing on the fourteenth hole, walking up to the green when out of the bushes come a very well endowed masked naked man running across the green in front of them, into the bushes on the other side.   The first lady gasped and said, "That wasn't my husband"  The second lady sighed and said, "That wasn't my husband"  The third lady said, "That wasn't anyone from THIS Club!"

    • Played 9 yesterday at Cape Ann in Essex, MA. Played awful with maybe 4 really good shots but the course is so beautiful being right on the water it's hard to be to upset. I haven't practiced in forever so I'll need to get going on that.  Been better getting to the gym since I've been out here in NH. I came out from Minnesota for my well being so I figured I should be working on just that. Still hovering around 226 which surprises me as my sister in law feeds me quite well. Excited to be back east for the Celtics coronation. Go Celts!!!
